Ueltschi Takes Nation’s No. 10-Ranked Player the Distance

After winning six consecutive matches to advance to the Round of 32, Catalin Gard of Mississippi and the No. 10 ranked player in collegiate tennis downed Ueltschi in a hard-fought 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-0 victory.
Ueltschi, a sophomore from Mendoza, Argentina, dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, before cruising to the second set victory. However; in the final stanza Ueltschi started suffering from severe cramping and Gard took advantage to notch the win.
“Freddy had a wonderful run and really helped put Montana State tennis on the map,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “It’ll be interesting to see if he can receive a top 100 ranking. There’s no doubt that he can compete with the best in collegiate tennis and he is fully capable of greater things.”
The Montana State men will host the Bobcat Open this weekend in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The Bobcat Open is a 32-draw singles tournament that features past and present MSU players, as well as, other players within the region.
