Bobcat Tennis Standout Makes Main Draw at All-American

Ueltschi, a sophomore from Mendoza, Argentina, opened the tournament winning five matches in the pre-qualifying round to advance to the qualifying bracket. Once in the qualifying bracket, Ueltschi recorded a pair of victories to advance to the main draw. The main draw features numerous players ranked among the nation’s top 50.
“There are only 32 players left in the main draw, and considering there were 256 players in the pre-qualifying rounds, for him to advance is pretty amazing,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “Federico (Ueltschi) is one of two players that started in the pre-qualifying round to advance to the main draw.”
On Wednesday, Ueltschi posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Claes Lindholm of Ole Miss to advance to the main draw. Lindholm had been ranked No. 97 in the nation, and had just come off a victory over the No. 54 ranked player.
“I have never heard of another Montana State player who has competed at this level,” Phillips said. “Freddy (Ueltschi) is competing like a rock mentally, and he is playing very smart tennis. The exciting thing is that he has yet another level.”
Based on his performance over the past week, Ueltschi should receive a top 100 ranking, which would be a first for the Montana State tennis program. His opponent in the round of 32 will be decided late Wednesday evening.
