“Our passing was great,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “It was the reason we didn’t get things done in our loss to Sacramento State. (Tonight) it made the difference, coupled with NAU’s serving problems.”
Montana State (11-5, 2-2) overcame an early 5-1 deficit and then two match points to record a 31-29 win in game one. Trailing 29-27, MSU used a Lumberjack service error, a block from LeAnn Kinvig and Zanto and won the opening stanza on an NAU hitting miscue.
“It was crucial to get the first game win,” Malauulu said. “We did a nice job keeping our composure and fighting through the final four points. That really gave us a boost for the rest of the match.”
In the second stanza, the Bobcats built an 18-14 advantage, however, Northern Arizona (7-8, 1-2) rattled off an 8-1 run to take a 22-19 lead. MSU then regained the lead at 23-22 on an Angela Wiebe ace. MSU broke away from the Lumberjacks down the stretch with a 7-5 run, winning on a Meggie Malyurek kill.
In the final set, MSU overcame an early 5-1 deficit to take a 10-9 lead following a Kinvig/Zanto block. However, the Lumberjacks answered with an 11-7 run to stake a 20-17 advantage. MSU then fought back with six straight points to take a 23-20 lead on a Nadine Goldi kill. The Bobcats closed out the match when NAU’s Nikki Randall put the final serve of the game into the net.
Also contributing to the Bobcat win was setter Kamber Kelly with 28 assists, a team-high 16 digs, five kills and three blocks.
NAU was paced by Ellie Butterfield with 19 kills and seven digs.
MSU will host Montana on Friday night in Worthington Arena as they look to break the all-time Montana State attendance record of 6,378 set last season.
