Montana State Spikers Stung By Hornets

“(Lisa) Beauchene is a good setter, but it wasn’t like we didn’t know what she was going to do,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “But to her credit, she made the plays and we did not.”
Sacramento State (16-10, 7-2) jumped out early in the match taking a 10-5 advantage. However, Montana State (14-8, 5-5) responded with a 7-1 run to take a 12-11 lead following a block by Kamber Kelly and Angela Wiebe. MSU built the margin to 19-16 on a LeAnn Kinvig block, before the Hornets rattled off a 6-0 run to take 22-19.
Sacramento State held a three-point cushion before the Bobcats tied the score at 26-all on a Kim Stonehouse kill. With the score tied at 28-all, the Hornets tallied the final two points, winning on a Montana State miscue.
In the second stanza, the game was tied 14 times before the Hornets pulled away from an 18-all tie with four consecutive points. Sacramento State won the game on an Emily Wilson kill.
The final game belonged to the Hornets as Sacramento State out-hit the Bobcats .273 to .093. Sacramento State blocked MSU’s Stonehouse on the final play to win the match.
Sophomore Meggie Malyurek paced the Bobcats with 14 kills and eight digs, while libero Kandice Kelly recorded a match-high 18 digs. The only statistical category the Bobcats did better than Sacramento State was in blocking as MSU out-blocked the Hornets 10 to 6. MSU was led at the net by Megan Zanto and Angela Wiebe with five blocks each.
“It came down to details,” Malauulu said. “We didn’t respond to what Sacramento State was giving us, and against a team that controls the ball as well as they do, you’re not going to come out ahead.”
Aside from Beauchene, the Hornets were led by Sandra Bandimere with 16 kills and six digs, while Kazmiera Imrie added 15 kills and a .448 attack mark.
MSU will host Northern Arizona on Saturday night in its final home match of the season.
