The Montana State men's basketball team caps its first two weeks of practice with a scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm in Worthington Arena. MSU coach Mick Durham, presiding over his 14th Bobcat preseason camp as Bobcat head coach, will be watching for both scheme and personnel issues during his team's first scrimmage.
"We have our man-to-man defense in, and we've spent a little time on our zone," Durham said, "so I'll be interested to see how far along we are in that area. I want to look at how we take care of the ball and how we rebound the ball, and I want to see some different combinations, how different guys work with each other."
Durham welcomes back a pair of starters -- guard Jason Erickson and forward Josh Barsh -- and three other lettermen from last year. The presence of Erickson and backcourt mate Frank Brown gives Durham hope that his team will operate an up-tempo offense and aggressive defense this year.
"I think we'll play with a lot faster tempo, especially when Frank Brown is in the game," Durham said. He has the ability to change a game in transition, and hopefully this year we'll be able to take advantage of that more often."
Saturday's scrimmage will showcase several talented youngsters, including three freshmen from Bozeman High. Nick Dissly and PJ Owsley, members of last year's Hawk State Championship squad, and Casey Durham, who helped lead Bozeman High to the title game in 2002. "We have some good young players," Durham said. "With so many new guys, with seven freshmen, we've had to be real patient and move at a pretty slow pace."
The scrimmage is free and open to the public.
