Bobcat Spikers Host Last Home Stand This Weekend

The Montana State volleyball squad will host its final two home matches of the season this weekend in Shroyer Gym. The Bobcats will face perennial league power Sacramento State, Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. MSU will close out the 2003 home schedule against Northern Arizona, Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats will honor their lone senior on Saturday night, when they say goodbye to Natalie Paredes.

REWRAPPING THE WEEK THAT WAS:
The Bobcats split a pair of Big Sky Conference road matches last weekend. MSU opened play with a 30-25, 30-28, 30-23 setback at Idaho State. Freshman Kim Stonehouse paced the Bobcats with a team-high 12 kills, while fellow middle blocker Angela Wiebe led MSU at the net with a match-high four blocks. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 28 assists and tallied a team-high 14 digs. The Bobcats rebounded from their loss with a 21-30, 30-23, 30-16, 30-28 victory over Weber State, which avenged an early season loss to the Wildcats. Sophomore Meggie Malyurek pounded down a career-high 18 kills, while adding 14 digs for her 12th double-double of the year. Also notching a career-high was Wiebe with 11 kills. The freshman from Winnipeg, Manitoba also notched seven blocks. Megan Zanto tied her career-high with 16 kills, while adding seven blocks in the victory over Weber State.
MONTANA STATE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Sophomore outside hitter Meggie Malyurek was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Idaho State and Weber State. For the weekend, the 6-foot native of Big Horn, Wyo., totaled 27 kills (3.86 kpg) and 25 digs (3.57 dpg). She had her best outing of the weekend as MSU defeated Weber State in four games. For the match, she notched a career-high 18 kills, hit .366 (18-3-41) from the floor and added 14 digs, an ace and a block.
CROWD CRAZY:
The Montana State University volleyball program continues to be one of the nation’s success stories. This week, the ‘Cats are ranked No. 14, averaging 1,553 fans per game. Three weeks ago, MSU drew 4,741 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz clash, and outside of Hawai’i, it is the fourth largest single-match crowd in the nation this season. In addition, over the past two seasons, MSU has been ranked among the nation’s top 10 all-academic teams.
