THE STORYLINE
Fresh off its stunning come-from-behind win over #10 Northern Arizona, Montana State wraps up a two-game homestand against Sacramento State on Saturday. Montana State has won back-to-back games for the first time this season, and avoided extending its home losing streak to three games. Travis Lulay engineered two touchdown drives in the last 2:09 of the game, aided significantly by Corey Smith’s recovery of an on-side kick. The Bobcats have now won five games in Mike Kramer’s tenure of three-plus years against nationally-ranked I-AA opponents.

F Travis the Terrific... Travis Lulay’s performances the last two weeks have been reminiscent of the quarterback who led MSU on a march through November to the Big Sky title last year. In the last two games, Lulay has completed 71% of his passes, and last weekend he led the ‘Cats to his third fourth-quarter comeback win in 16 starts.
Pinning ‘Em
Mike Kramer has taken his punt team down an unconventional road in the last four games, but it has paid dividends. Travis Lulay has become MSU’s punter, and using a rugby-like roll punt has averaged 38.5 yards on 17 punts, pinning the opponent inside the 20 six times.
Finishing Strong
Mike Kramer’s teams have shown the ability to finish strong. Between 1990 and ‘99, the Bobcats were 6-20 in the month of November without a single winning month. Mike Kramer’s teams are 5-6 in November, and last year’s 4-1 ride to the Big Sky title was the school’s first winning November since 1984.
Catching On
Scott Turnquist caught 14 passes for the Bobcats Saturday, the second-most receptions in one game in MSU history.
Whitewashin’
Montana State’s shutout of Saint Mary’s was the Cats’ first since blanking Sacramento State in 2001. It was MSU’s first road shutout since beating Weber State 48-0 in 1984, 213 games ago. The Bobcats have held the opponent scoreless in 19 of the team’s 32 quarters of football.
C-Note
A Montana State back has gained over 100 yards in three of MSU’s seven games this year. Bruce Molock has been that man twice, the first two 100-yard games as a Bobcat but the third and fourth of his career (he ran for 199 yards against ISU for Northridge).
Combo Backs
David Mayfield rushed for 101 yards against Wyoming, and Bruce Molock gained 120 against Gardner-Webb. That gave the Bobcats different back-to-back 100-yarders for the first time since 1993.
Pickin’...
Bobcat defensive end Clive Lowe, a redshirt freshman, has intercepted two passes this season. Both came as a result of dropping into coverage in MSU’s zone blitz scheme. Lowe is tied for the team lead in interceptions.
...and Breakin’
Bobcat cornerback Joey Thomas broke up four NAU passes last weekend. He now has eight this season. As a team, the Bobcats busted up eight Jason Murrietta passes last weekend.
Seeing Red
Since scoring on eight straight red zone opportunities, the Bobcats have struggled in the last two games. MSU is 4-for-8 in the past two games, after going 2-for-4 in each game. The ‘Cats have converted 12 of their last 16 red zone chances, and are 13-for-17 on the season. MSU is 6-for-6 in goal-to-go situations this year.
Turning it Over
MSU was -2 in turnovers last week, winning for the first time this year with a negative turnover margin.
Bending, but Not Breaking
The Bobcat defense allowed its first five opponents 236 yards in the first five games, but 371 in the last three.

With each game, Bobcat quarterback Travis Lulay establishes himself not only as one of the top quarterbacks in Division I-AA, but as one of the premiere signal callers in school history. After just 16 games as MSU’s starter, Lulay is already 4th in school history in passing yards, 7th in touchdown passes, and 4th in completions. He is the first true freshman to lead the ‘Cats to a win in over Montana since Dave Alt in 1956.
One-Two-Three, Cha-Cha-Cha
The Bobcat offense has done a good job moving the sticks in recent weeks. After being forced into three-and-out possessions 14 times in 42 drives in the season’s first three games, MSU has only 13 three-and-outs in the last four games (58 possessions).
Bouncing Back
Travis Lulay threw four interceptions in the season opener at Wyoming, but has been intercepted only four times in the seven games since. In MSU’s first two games, Lulay was 28-for-59 with four interceptions and two touchdowns. Since, he is 102-for-173 (4 INTs, 6 TDs).
The 100-Yard Clubs
Bruce Molock became MSU’s 39th 100 yard rusher (stats available since ‘64) by getting 120 against Gardner-Webb, and at Saint Mary’s became the 19th player to rush for 100 yards or more at least twice in a season.
Stiffening Up

On Sac State: “They are big and mobile on offense, very talented at running back with Gross and multi-dimensional with Fred Amey at receiver. The loss of Ryan Leadingham would hurt anyone’s offense, but they have ways to hurt you. Ryan Kroeker is an all-over-the-field linebacker, comparable to Matt McFadden (of Weber), and they have good skill at corner. They’re stuck in a little bit of a rut. They’re a pretty conventional Big Sky team, in that they run and pass equally well. Gross runs very hard, they use multiple tight ends to try to out-flank you, they aren’t afraid to put the ball up. They can hurt you in a variety of ways.”
On the Bobcats: “We bled from a thousand wounds on defense Saturday. Our offensive line protected Travis very, very well, yet Travis held the ball in the third quarter a little too long when guys were open. He really got into a rhythm in the fourth quarter, when it was almost too late. It took some stellar play from our defense to deny NAU touchdowns and points in the second half, and we were able to generate a win on an awfully lucky play, an on-side kick. We missed some opportunities offensively and defensively, but we also made some big plays. It was a great stare-down between their offense and our defense.”

On Sac State: “They are big and mobile on offense, very talented at running back with Gross and multi-dimensional with Fred Amey at receiver. The loss of Ryan Leadingham would hurt anyone’s offense, but they have ways to hurt you. Ryan Kroeker is an all-over-the-field linebacker, comparable to Matt McFadden (of Weber), and they have good skill at corner. They’re stuck in a little bit of a rut. They’re a pretty conventional Big Sky team, in that they run and pass equally well. Gross runs very hard, they use multiple tight ends to try to out-flank you, they aren’t afraid to put the ball up. They can hurt you in a variety of ways.”
On the Bobcats: “We bled from a thousand wounds on defense Saturday. Our offensive line protected Travis very, very well, yet Travis held the ball in the third quarter a little too long when guys were open. He really got into a rhythm in the fourth quarter, when it was almost too late. It took some stellar play from our defense to deny NAU touchdowns and points in the second half, and we were able to generate a win on an awfully lucky play, an on-side kick. We missed some opportunities offensively and defensively, but we also made some big plays. It was a great stare-down between their offense and our defense.”
