Malyurek Hits Career-High to Pace Bobcat Spikers Over Weber State

“(Tonight’s) match is exactly what we’ve been looking for the past couple of weeks,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “The kids did a great job staying within themselves and not forcing anything. They played every point, especially in the fourth game when our backs were against a wall.”
Weber State (6-14, 3-6) took the opening game, pulling away from a 20-19 advantage with a 10-2 run to win the stanza. In the second set, Montana State (14-7, 5-4) built a 19-14 margin on a Megan Zanto kill and used an 8-4 run to win the game on another Zanto put away.
“The second game was the key to the match,” Malauulu said. “After losing the opening game, the girls responded very well and picked-up the level of play. It really set the tone for us the rest of the match.”
The Bobcats dominated the third stanza, out-hitting Weber State .308 to .091. MSU also established their block, notching four in the game.
In the final set, Weber State took an early 9-4 advantage, before MSU closed to within 10-7 on an Angela Wiebe kill. The Wildcats built the lead to 16-12, before the Bobcats rallied to tie the score at 17-all. WSU answered with a 7-3 run to take a 24-20 advantage. Montana State rallied to close the margin to 25-24 on a Zanto kill.
Weber State then gained a 28-26 advantage before a Wiebe kill knotted the game at 28-all. Malyurek produced the final two kills of the game to give the Bobcats the victory.
“It came down to who wanted it more,” Malauulu said. “Our girls left their hearts on the court.”
In addition to Malyurek’s career-high, Wiebe also tallied a career-high with 11 kills, while Zanto tied her all-time mark with 16 kills. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 51 assists and added nine digs. MSU was led defensively by Malyurek with 14 digs.
Weber State was led by Stephanie Birch with 18 kills and seven digs.
MSU will host Sacramento State on Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
