Gibson and Lee Guide Bobcat Harriers at NCAA Pre-Nationals

Montana State cross country standout Jonathan Gibson finished 28th overall to pace the Bobcat men to a 19th place showing at the NCAA Pre-National Meet, Saturday afternoon.
Gibson, a junior from Woodinville, Wash., covered the 8000-meter course in a time of 24:09.7. He was followed by teammates Kevin Clary, 41st, 24:26.8; Tony Bachmann, 111th, 25:12.0; Brett Winegar, 133rd, 25:24.5; Caleb Ambrose, 182nd, 25:53.6; Nick Green, 196th, 26:03.9; and Josh Ricardi, 227th, 26:45.6
The University of Colorado won the men’s “Gold” race with 109 points, followed by Northern Arizona 114, Ohio State 141, Georgetown 201 and Arizona 202. The Bobcats tied for 19th with Big Sky Conference foe Weber State with 489 points. The “Gold” race featured 35 NCAA Division I schools.
“We didn’t have a great race, but we were fairly solid with our performance,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “Jonathan Gibson shined and ran real well. I also thought Brett Winegar had his best collegiate race, moving from our No. 6 runner to No. 4 (this afternoon).”
The Bobcat men entered the race looking to knock off higher ranked opponents. MSU defeated No. 32 LaSalle and tied No. 33 Weber State.
“We continue to get better and we’ve caught up to both Weber State and Montana,” Kennedy said. “If you scored both races together, Northern Arizona won handily, while MSU, Montana and Weber State were only separated by 1.5 points.”
The MSU women were paced by senior Ariana Lee. The native of Lander, Wyo., placed 42nd overall, covering the 6000-meter course in a time of 21:30.3.
Lee was followed by Mayra Morgado, 95th, 22:13.4; Brooke Cantu, 133rd, 22:41.6; Christin Drake Smith, 163rd, 23:08.1; Sierra Kuethe 176th, 23:21.9; Ellen Swogger, 202nd, 24:01.6; and Courtney Hugstad-Vaa, 209th, 24:28.1.
Stanford won the women’s “Gold” race with 66 points, followed by North Carolina State 101, Colorado 148, Wake Forest 163 and UCLA 173. The Bobcats placed 25th overall with 609 points in the 33-team field.
“Ariana (Lee) had a nice day and ran her fastest 6k,” Kennedy said. “Morgado was also very solid, but where I was most pleased were the efforts of Christin Drake Smith and Sierra Kuethe. They really closed the gap and finished closer to our No. 3 runner than they ever have.”
MSU will compete at the Big Sky Championships, Nov. 1 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
