“I don’t know why we felt we needed to be at the end of our rope before we started playing,” said first-year MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “I can go down the list; serving, passing hitting, blocking— nothing went well for us.”
Eastern Washington (14-6, 6-0) opened the match taking an early 15-10 advantage, before the Bobcats battled back to 18-16. However, the Eagles scored five straight points to push the margin to 23-16. EWU closed out the game on a 7-0 run.
In the second stanza, the Eagles opened with a 5-1 run and built the lead to 18-13 before Montana State (12-6, 3-3) rallied to tie the game at 18-all following a Meggie Malyurek kill. Eastern Washington used a late rally to pull away from a 21-all tie out-scoring MSU 9-2 down the stretch.
In the final set, the Eagles took a commanding 22-9 lead before the Bobcats battled back to out-score EWU 16-8 over the rest of the game. However, the Eagles held on to notch a 30-25 win.
“We didn’t do a good job of paying attention to the details,” Malauulu said. “We’re the top blocking team in the league and one of the best in the country and (tonight) we just didn’t get it done.”
Sophomore Megan Zanto paced the Bobcats with a match-high 12 kills. She was the only MSU player to reach double-figure kill totals. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 27 assists and added 12 digs, while younger sister Kandice Kelly notched a match-high 15 digs.
MSU will host Portland State on Saturday in Shroyer Gym.
