NOTING THE ‘CATS
What to Watch
F Familiar Terrain... For the second straight year, Montana State enters Week Two of its Big Sky season against Weber State coming off a bitterly disappointing loss to Idaho State. In both games, MSU had the ball in Bengal territory when time expired. Last year, however, the ‘Cats had Weber State at home. This year, MSU has to travel to Ogden, where it has lost on six of its last eight trips.
F The Ol’ O-Line Shuffle... It seems like April again. Last spring, the ‘Cats struggled just to field a healthy offensive line. With injuries to Mataio Toilolo and Lawrence Figueroa, Zach Wolf returns to start at center and Chris Haynes makes his first start at guard.
F Watch those Kicks... In MSU’s six games, the kick teams provided a major turning point:
Date Winner Play(s)
8/30 Wyoming Cowboys block MSU punt for TD
9/6 MSU Corey Smith returns punt, KO for TD
9/20 Cal Poly Darrell Johnson returns punt for TD
9/27 UNC Bears convert 4th down from punt
10/4 SMC Two 2-pointers, 2 fake punts
10/11 ISU Corey Smith fumbles punt at MSU 13
Out of the Gates
Other than the forgettable 0-11 season in 2000, Montana State has not stood 2-5 overall or 0-2 in conference play since 1994, when the team won its first two then lost seven straight.
Finishing Strong
Mike Kramer’s teams have shown the ability to finish strong. Between 1990 and ‘99, the Bobcats were 6-20 in the month of November without a single winning month. Mike Kramer’s teams are 5-6 in November, and last year’s 4-1 ride to the Big Sky title was the school’s first winning November since 1984.
Taking Care of the Ball
Travis Lulay’s first quarter interception Saturday snapped a string of 15 straight possessions without a turnover. The ‘Cats had a string of 30 straight possessions without a turnover before turning the ball over on the final two drives against UNC.
Whitewash
Montana State’s shutout of Saint Mary’s last week was the Cats’ first since blanking Sacramento State in 2001. It was MSU’s first road shutout since beating Weber State 48-0 in 1984, 213 games ago. C-Note A Montana State back has gained over 100 yards in three of MSU’s six games. Bruce Molock has been that man twice, the first two 100-yard games as a Bobcat but the third and fourth of his career (he ran for 199 yards against ISU for Northridge).
C-Note, Part II
David Mayfield rushed for 101 yards against Wyoming, and Bruce Molock gained 120 against Gardner-Webb. That gave the Bobcats different back-to-back 100-yarders for the first time since 1993.
Spreading it Around
After connecting with five different receivers in MSU’s first three games, Travis Lulay has been maniacal about spreading the wealth in the last three. Against UNC and Saint Mary’s, Lulay connected with nine different receivers, and against Idaho State he connected with eight different receivers. That trend is in sharp contrast to MSU’s tendency last season, when Junior Adams and Aaron Hill were clearly Lulay’s go-to receivers. Either Adams or Hill caught at least five passes in 11 of MSU’s 13 games in 2002. Four times in six games a Bobcat has caught at least five passes -- Scott Turnquist twice, Corey Smith, and Brandon Roosevelt once each.
Seeing Red
Montana State has scored on its last eight trips into the red zone, including six touchdowns and two field goals, over the last two games. All five of its trips into the red zone Saturday resulted in scores, including four touchdowns. On the season, MSU is 11-for-13 in the red zone, and are 5-for-5 in goal-to-go situations.
D’ing Up
Idaho State became Montana State’s first 2003 oppponent to gain more than 300 yards in a game. The Bengals had 331 yards Saturday. MSU still leads the Big Sky in total defense (251.8).
D’ing Up
Montana State’s defense has made a pretty strong statement through the season’s early going. Against two nationally-ranked I-AA squads and a Division I-A opponent, the Bobcats are...
* 1st in the Big Sky and 6th in I-AA in total defense, 251.8
* 3rd in the Big Sky and 19th nationally in rushing defense, 103.0
* 1st in the Big Sky and 15th in I-AA in pass defense, 148.8
* 1st in the Big Sky and 8th nationally in scoring defense, 14.2
D’ing Up, Part II
Montana State is the only team in Montana’s last 142 games, dating back to a Grizzly loss to Weber State in ‘92, to hold UM to just seven points.
Hip! Hip! Lulay!!
With each game, Bobcat quarterback Travis Lulay establishes himself not only as one of the top quarterbacks in Division I-AA, but as one of the premiere signal callers in school history. After just 14 games as MSU’s starter, Lulay is already 10th in school history in passing yards, 8th in touchdown passes, and 8th in completions. He is the first true freshman to lead the ‘Cats to a win in over Montana since Dave Alt in 1956.
In Lulay’s Way
Wyoming’s defense did something no opponent had previously done to MSU quarterback Travis Lulay in the Cowboys’ 21-10 win in the season opener. UW picked off four Lulay passes, becoming the only team to intercept Lulay more than once. Lulay threw only three picks last year. Lulay has been picked off only once since that season-opening loss. Bouncing Back Travis Lulay threw four interceptions in the season opener at Wyoming, but has been intercepted only twice in the five games since. In MSU’s first two games, Lulay was 28-for-59 with four interceptions and two touchdowns. In the last three, he is 55-for-102 (2 INTs, 2 TDs).
The 100-Yard Club
Bruce Molock became MSU’s 39th 100 yard rusher (stats available since ‘64) by getting 120 against Gardner-Webb, and at Saint Mary’s became the 19th player to rush for 100 yards or more at least twice in a season.
Stiffening Up
The Bobcat defense has allowed opponents only one score after the team’s eight offensive turnovers.
The Home Fires
The ‘Cats are 17-16 in Bobcat Stadium in its current configuration, 9-11 in Big Sky games, and 1-2 against Division II foes.

KRAMER’S QUOTES
On Weber State: “In spite of their statistics, Weber State runs a very balanced offensive attack. They run the ball and operate the passing game equally well. Nick Chournos is a quality running back, and their offensive front is playing very well, churning out the yards. I was mightily impressed with how they played against Eastern Washington. Weber has a trio of outstanding linebackers. Those three in particular -- and the defense in general -- really played outstanding football in Missoula last week. Weber plays a scorched earth style of defense. They burn the town down and burn the bridges behind them. They leave you nothing and make you earn every inch of ground. I think that a key to Saturday’s game will be getting an early lead. Whoever is able to do that will be able to operate its game plan with a strong sense of control.”
On the Bobcats: “Brent Swaggert and Jeff Bolton are both playing in dominant fashion right now. Brent is having a quality senior year on top of a quality career. He’s made steady progress throughout his career, and he’s still making progress. He’s playing nasty within the confines of the play, he’s finishing blocks, and sometimes I feel he’s emotionally carrying the offense. I saw some positives last weekend. We don’t know how to quit, we don’t know when we should lay down, and that’s a huge positive. Defensively we played well last week, but we surrendered some long drives, some field position drives, that really put us behind the eight ball. Offensively, we had some early miscues by veteran players, but those guys fought through that. But we fell behind, and two-score leads are very difficult for us to overcome with how our offense is playing right now.”
