“Meggie (Malyurek) had an outstanding night,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We were looking for our outsides to give us a lift and I’m very happy with their effort.”
Montana State (12-5, 3-2) rallied from an early 4-1 deficit in the opening stanza to take a 17-9 advantage following a Nadine Goldi kill. Montana (6-11, 1-4) closed to within 29-25, before the Bobcats received a kill off the block from LeAnn Kinvig to notch the win.
In the second set, MSU held a 25-20 lead on a Malyurek kill, before the Grizzlies rallied to tie the score at 29-all. Following a solo block from Megan Zanto the Bobcats held a 31-30 margin and captured the game on a Malyurek kill.
In the final game, Montana State broke away from a 10-all tie to take an 18-11 advantage. MSU held the margin for the rest of the game and won the match on a Malyurek kill that dribbled over the match.
“It was just her night,” Malauulu said, referring to Malyurek, a 6-foot native of Big Horn, Wyo. “We did a nice job passing the ball and we were able to run our offense at a high level.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack was Goldi with eight kills and 11 digs. MSU setter Kamber Kelly dished out 32 assists and chipped in seven digs. For the match, the Bobcats out-blocked Montana 12 to 6. MSU was led at the net by Zanto with a match-high eight blocks.
The Grizzlies were paced in the loss by Lizzie Wertz and EvaLyn Whitehead with nine kills apiece.
MSU will host league-leading Eastern Washington on Friday in Shroyer Gym.
