Bobcat Spikers Finish 2-1 At Pioneer Classic

over the weekend. MSU completed the weekend with a 30-27, 30-16, 30-22 win over DU.The 'Cats also defeated Southern Mississippi 30-20, 30-25, 22-30, 30-23, and dropped ahard-fought 30-27, 31-29, 25-30, 30-23 decision to Fresno State.
DENVER RECAP:
Freshman Meggie Malyurek posted a match-high 15 kills to lift the Bobcats to a 3-0 win overDenver in the final match of the Pioneer Classic. Malyurek, a 6-foot outside hitter from Big
Horn, Wyo., also chipped in 10 digs and four blocks, while hitting an impressive .353 from the
field.
Also contributing to the MSU attack were LeAnn Kinvig with nine kills, while Aimee Halyk
and Ana Schanze with eight, apiece. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 38 assists and added six
digs.
I thought we played some of our best volleyball of the season against Denver and Fresno
State, said MSU head coach Dave Gantt. We're starting to find our personality and I really
like what we accomplsihed on Saturday.
For their efforts over the weekend, Aimee Halyk and LeAnn Kinvig were named to the
all-tournament team.
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI RECAP:
Against Southern Mississippi, senior Aimee Halyk notched a career-high 25 kills, while
sophomore transfer LeAnn Kinvig also notched a career-high with 17 kills to go along with a
team-high 15 digs. For the match, MSU out-hit the Golden Eagles .245 to .155, while also
holding an advantage in aces, digs and blocks. Sophomore setter Kamber Kelly dished out 49
assists and had nine digs and four blocks in the victory.
FRESNO STATE RECAP:
On Saturday morning, the ‘Cats squandered late leads as the Bulldogs won in four games. In
the opening set, MSU held a 27-25 advantage following a Megan Zanto kill. However, FSU
battled back with five unanswered points for the win.
In the second game, Montana State held a 28-25 margin, before Fresno State rallied to win on
a service ace. In the third stanza, Montana State got out to a 13-7 advantage on a Halyk kill
and cruised to the 30-25 victory. In the final game, the Bulldogs got off to a quick 15-10 lead,
before MSU rallied to close to within 19-18 on a Halyk block. Fresno State then went on an11-5 run to close out the match.
Halyk and Kinvig again led the Bobcats with 21 and 12 kills, respectively. Kinvig alsoregistered a team-high 19 digs. Senior Ana Schanze had a match-high 12 block assists as the‘Cats out-blocked FSU 17 to 12. Kelly dished out 47 assists and had 11 digs in the losingeffort.
"I was really pleased with our level of play against Fresno State," said MSU head coach DaveGantt. "Even though we beat Southern Mississippi, it wasn’t a good match for us. Saturdaymorning, I thought we did a lot of good things. However, we had a difficult time closing out thefirst two games and that’s something we need to work on. We need to stay with our system.We did things that were uncharacteristic of us and that got us into trouble. I’m not going tomeasure this match with a W or L, but instead by a very solid performance."
