Montana State women's basketball standout and Big SkyConference co-MVP Jessica Blake was awarded one of 58NCAA postgraduate scholarships. The $5,000 scholarship isgiven to 29 men and 29 women who participated in wintersports, which include basketball, fencing, gymnastics, icehockey, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, indoor track and
field and wrestling.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a
student-athlete must have an overall grade- point average of
3.20 or higher and have performed with distinction as a
member of the varsity team in the sport in which they were
nominated. The student-athlete must also have behaved, both
on and off the field, in a manner that brought credit to the
institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete must intend to continue academic
work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
Jessica Blake exemplifies everything a student-athlete should be, said MSU academic
coordinator Jill Allison. Her commitment to community service, dedication to the team and
academics are indisputable. The postgraduate scholarship will allow her to fulfill her goals and
career aspirations. With her personality and intellect, Jessica will be able to help many people
in the future.
A two-time Big Sky academic all-conference selection, Blake was also named to the Verizon
District VII All-Academic second-team this winter. On the court, the 6-foot-2 center from
Shelley, Idaho led the Big Sky Conference in scoring and filed-goal percentage. For her
efforts, she was named co-MVP of the league and garnered unanimous all-conference
first-team kudos, as well.
Jessica is extremely deserving of this distinguished award, said Bobcat women's basketball
coach Robin Potera. We are very excited for her. By winning this award, it shows how well
the student-athletes at Montana State compete on a national level, both on and off the playing
field.
Blake, a psychology major, is planning to attend Idaho State University and pursue a master's
degree in counseling. She becomes the first MSU student-athlete to earn an NCAA
postgraduate scholarship since Tennyson Ballek received the honor in 1999. Blake was the
only female Big Sky Conference recipient during the winter sports season.
