Sacramento State's Peter Farkas notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles as the Hornets
defeated Montana State 4-3 in the 2002 Big Sky Conference men's tennis championship
match, Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat Tennis Center. Farkas' victory capped three straight
singles wins as the Hornets rallied from a 3-1 deficit.
The Bobcats got on the board first, winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and 3.
MSU then went up 2-0 as freshman Braden Olson (Missoula) defeated Ali Abbou at No. 4
singles, 6-2, 6-1. Sacramento State answered by winning at No. 3 singles, before Bobcat
senior Thijs Goossens notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Fabio Jesus to give the ‘Cats
a 3-1 advantage. However, the Hornets rallied winning at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 to earn their third
title in the last four years.
We have no regrets, said MSU men's coach Mike Phillips. Everyone played great and
Sacramento State stepped-up when they needed to. The match was so close the entire way
and you never knew what was going to happen.
Montana State ended the season with a 13-10 overall record and an 8-2 Big Sky Conference
slate. The Bobcats will lose the services of seniors Goossens, BJ Hauck, Lukasz Mazur and
Jason Swanson. The foursome guided the ‘Cats to MSU's first-ever Big Sky title in 2000.
I'm proud of the way our guys played, Phillips said. This year's senior class has set the
standard for other Bobcat squads to emulate. We had an outstanding season and the guys
know they left everything they had on the court.
Sacramento State earned the Big Sky's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships next
month.
