Montana State Volleyball Program Adds Three Freshmen Recruits

Two days after signing three transfers to be part of the
Montana State volleyball program, Bobcat head coach
Dave Gantt has inked three freshmen to national
letters-of-intent to play at MSU this fall. Nikki Donald and
Anglea Wiebe of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and Kim
Stonehouse of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, will be
eligible to compete for the Bobcats this season.
Donald, a 6-foot outside hitter who prepped at Kelvin
High School, was a three sport standout in volleyball,
soccer and hockey. An honor roll student, she captained the 2001 Canadian Junior National
team. Donald played two seasons on the Manitoba provincial team and guided the squad to a
fourth place finish at the 2001 Canada Games. She also has four years of club volleyball
experience, as well.
Nikki (Donald) has captained every team she's been a part of and she'll bring a very mature
attitude to the program, Gantt said. She is most consistent with her serve-receive game and
has the ability to come up with the correct shot at the right moment. Nikki is a very
sophisticated competitor who'll provide help for us on the outside from the first day of
practice.
Wiebe, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker/rightside hitter who prepped at Mennonite Brethren
Collegiate Institute, is a two-time member of the Canadian Junior National team. As a senior,
she was a provincial AAAA All-Star. Wiebe also earned the prestigious Players Choice
Award this season, which is presented to the athlete who exemplifies positive qualities towards
their team, opponents and the sport of volleyball and is voted by fellow players who competed
in the 2001 Provincial High School Volleyball Championships.
Angela (Wiebe, pronounced WEEB) comes from a volleyball playing family with two brothers
also playing collegiately, Gantt said. She possesses a resiliency that's very fun to watch.
Angela is very athletic and probably will have the quickest feet on the team. She is a redshirt
candidate this fall and we feel that she has unlimited potential within our program.
Stonehouse, a 6-foot outside hitter/middle blocker who prepped at McCoy High School in
Medicine Hat, is a two-time South Eastern Zone Volleyball League most valuable player. She
was also a two-time SEZVL first-team all-star selection, as well. Stonehouse also garnered
McCoy High School rookie of the year accolades as a sophomore and was the MVP of the
club midget volleyball provincials the same season. An outstanding athlete, Stonehouse also
received all-league honors in basketball.
Kim (Stonehouse) might be the best pure athlete we've recruited to Montana State, and that's
a huge statement, Gantt said. She is another redshirt candidate as her volleyball skills will
develop to match her athleticism. Kim is an explosive jumper and has the potential to play at a
variety of spots.
Given the scenario of the way our roster has changed from the end of last season, I think we
have done an outstanding job bringing is a quality recruiting class that will help us maintain our
level of play and give us balance, as well, Gantt said. We had a small window of time to
develop the in-roads to get these athletes and I couldn't be more pleased with the quality they'llbring to Montana State.
The three freshman recruits join LeAnn Kinvig, Sexsmith, Alberta, Ana Popovic, Hamburg,Germany and Natalie Paredes, Malibu, Cal., who signed with the Bobcats on Monday.
