Stubbs Hits Career High As Women Down Boston University

with a 74-65 victory over Boston University in the opening
game of the DePaul-Moran Realty Classic, Friday night. MSU
will play the winner of DePaul-Loyola-Chicago in the
championship game on Saturday night.
"We started out a little tentative," said second-year coach
Robin Potera-Haskins. "I felt like it was a season-opener, and
in a way it was. Once we settled into a good rhythm we started
to pull away down the stretch."
Montana State (5-0) opened their first-round game trying to
figure out the Boston University (1-4) zone. The ‘Cats received
11 points from Stubbs and five points, including a three-pointer from Brandi Lewis to guide
MSU in scoring. However, it wasn’t enough as the Terriers entered intermission with a 31-30
advantage.
MSU shot 38 percent from the field in the first stanza and out-rebounded BU 22 to 17. Stubbs
paced the Bobcats under the glass with seven boards, while Sheila Hutchison added four.
Montana State also saw its post players get in early foul trouble as Stubbs, along with younger
sister Belinda, were each called on three occasions.
"The game was called pretty tightly and the Stubbs’ got into some foul trouble,"
Potera-Haskins said. "Fortunately, we weathered the storm and got great production from
each one of our kids."
Montana State opened the second period taking a 37-33 lead, but Boston University
responded with a 9-0 run to take a 42-37 margin with 14:25 remaining. A basket by Stubbs
and a long trey from Lewis pulled MSU to within 44-42 at the 13:11 mark. The Bobcats
recaptured the lead at 45-44 following a Belinda Stubbs three-point play with 11:55 remaining
in the game. BU responded and took a 53-51 lead at the 8:28 mark on a Courtney Jones
three-pointer.
With the score knotted at 53-all, MSU rattled off a 10-2 run to
take a 63-55 advantage at the 4:33 mark on a Stubbs
field-goal. The Bobcats converted ten-of-15 free throw
attempts down the stretch to secure the win.
For the game, Stubbs converted ten-of-17 from the field and
nine-of-13 from the free throw line. She also added an assist
and a blocked shot. Also in double-figures for the Bobcats was
Lewis, who finished the game with 13 points, including a
three-of-seven effort from beyond the three-point arc.
