versatility on the front line Thursday, signing a pair of junior college players to NationalLetters-of-Intent. Matt Towsley of Cabrillo (Calif.) Junior College and Dennis Woodall ofMurray State College in Oklahoma will join the Bobcat program next fall.
Each player is off to a good start in the 2002-03 season. Towsley, a 6-11, 265 lb center, scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the team’s 100-69 win on Tuesday, and isaveraging 21.0 points and 9.0 rebounds during Cabrillo’s 2-0 start. Woodall, a is averaging13.0 points and 2.5 rebounds through three games at Murray State, shooting 56.7% overalland 43.4% from three-point range.
Towsley is originally from Toledo, Ore., played at the University of Portland briefly beforetransferring to Cabrillo Junior College in Aptos, Calif., where he plays for Tony Marcopulos, who coached Towsley as an assistant at Portland. "From the time I first came into contact withMatt, I think he’s really improved," Marcopulos said. "He was far from being a good DivisionI player, but he’s a good kid who wants to be a good player. He works hard and doeseverything asked of him. He shoots well, has great touch around the basket, and his body has
changed considerably. He’s real coachable, and takes a lot of pride in getting better. He has a
chance to be a really good player at Montana State."
Durham said Towsley projects as a solid Big Sky center. "Matt has a big body, and we think
he has a lot of potential. His situation is a lot like (MSU center) Bo Segeberg, in that he played
at a Division I school and didn’t play much, so he’s at a junior college getting his confidence
back and getting some experience. He’s a strong inside player who shoots well. He’ll give us
good size inside, which will be a plus for us next year."
Woodall hails from Germany, where he was a member of the German National Team and saw
considerable action in international competition. He averaged 92. points, 3.8 rebounds, shot
56.7% from the field and 43.4% from three-point range last year. The 6-5, 235 lb forward can
play inside or outside. "Dennis can play on the perimeter or on the interior, he can shoot the
three or he can post up inside," said Murray State coach Mike St. John. He’s very explosive,
very strong, he can pass the basketball on the interior, and he sees things very well. He’s older,
which is a nice asset. He’s very mature off the floor, and is very well liked on our campus. Heis well-respected and admired by our administration and students."
"Dennis is a very versatile player," Durham said. "He can play inside and outside, which makeshim a good fit in our system. He has a good deal of experience, which is a positive, and he’smature. Dennis is a very athletic player who will give us options at both forward positions. Wethink he’ll be a good shooter from outside, but he’ll also be able to score down low."
Durham indicated that the signing of Towsley and Woodall will likely conclude MSU’s activityduring the early signing period.
