Bobcat Women's Basketball Program Inks Two High School Standouts

Alyssa Nelson, a 5-foot-5 point guard from Edina, Minn., have signed national letters-of-intentto play for the Montana State University women’s basketball team next season, announcedsecond-year Bobcat head coach Robin Potera-Haskins.
Hixon, a highly touted athlete at Galena High School, received NCAA Division I scholarshipoffers in basketball, volleyball and track from such schools as Colorado, TCU, Cal, BostonCollege, Fresno State and New Mexico. Last season, Hixon averaged 15 points, eightrebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks en route to being named NevadaAll-Northern Region first-team.
"Joanna Hixon will be an impact player for the Bobcats," Potera-Haskins said. "We’rehonored that she chose our University over several other prestigious institutions. She isextremely talented, versatile and plays with great intensity. Joanna has strong offensive skillsand is a defensive stopper, as well. She’ll certainly help us in our transition game."
Hixon led Galena High School to the 2000 Nevada state title as well as a state runner-up finish
in 2001. A two-time all-state selection, Hixon was one of 12 finalists for the Florence Murphy
Award as Greater Nevada’s Female Athlete of the Year her junior season. Hixon comes from
an athletic background as her father played football at the University of Nevada under Hall of
Fame coach Chris Ault.
Nelson, a three-time team captain at Breck School in Golden Valley, Minn., averaged 12.6
points, 7.1 steals, 5.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds, while shooting 77 percent from the free throw
line, last season as a junior. A three-time all-conference selection, Nelson was named to the
2002 All-Metro Defender squad.
"Alyssa Nelson is a very tenacious player that comes from a great program," Potera-Haskins
said. "She is a winner. Alyssa is a tremendous defensive player, a great passer and is
exceptional at running an offense. She is a very strong-willed athlete who plays in-your-face
defense. She plays well in the open court and is the type of kid you can count on."
Last year, Nelson guided Breck to a third place finish at the Minnesota State tournament andhas her squad poised for another run at the title this season. An outstanding athlete, she was afour-time all-conference performer and all-state selection in soccer. Nelson spent her summersplaying with the Metro Stars AAU team that finished third at junior nationals in 2002.
Potera-Haskins plans on adding a junior college standout later this week.
