Eastern Washington tailback Mario Sweet rushed for 72 yards, and the 16th-ranked team inDivision II, Central Washington, stunned Montana State 31-16 in Bozeman on Saturday.
Central Washington got one-yard TD runs from Will Johnson in the first half to grab a 14-3lead, went ahead 21-3 on a 14-yard Chase pass to Denny Brooks, and held on to upsetDivision I-AA MSU.
This is the hardest one I've had to deal with, ever, MSU coach Mike Kramer said of the
loss. We just got outplayed.
MSU was without the services of star running back Ryan Johnson, who tweaked his
already-injured right hamstring during pre-game warmups, and cornerback Joey Thomas didn't
play until after the half due to a slightly-sprained knee.
But the day was won for Central on the line of scrimmage. We didn't get any pressure on the
quarterback to speak of, Kramer said. And they did a good job of blocking us.
CWU gained 315 yards on the day, holding MSU to 278. A major special teams breakdown
again plagued MSU, as punter Nate Cook dropped a snap and was sacked. Central
Washington also owned third down, converting 6-of-18 on third down, holding MSU to
5-for-17.
Tyler Thomas, MSU's starting quarterback, was 13-for-31 on the day for 150 yards and twotouchdowns. Travis Lulay, who replaced Thomas in the second half, was 7-for-12 for 97yards. He threw an interception and fumbled once.
They came out and made plays, and we didn't, said MSU safety Kane Ioane. They justwent up for the ball and made the play, and we didn't. You have to give them all the credit, they came to play.
