second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 13rebounds to guide the Bobcats to a 64-52 victory over theUniversity of Montana, Sunday afternoon in the MontanaPower/Touch America Montana Classic in WorthingtonArena.
Montana State (15-7, 8-3) held the Lady Griz to 12 percent(4-of-33) from the field in first half and limited Montana (15-7,7-4) to one-of-17 from three-point range. The Bobcats, whonever trailed in the game, took an early 7-4 advantage on a pairof Amy Meckling free throws and increased their lead with a14-5 run to take a 21-9 margin on a Jinnifer Jeresek field goalwith 8:47 remaining in the first half. MSU held the 12-point lead
and entered intermission with a 28-16 advantage.
I thought we had our best defensive effort of the season, said MSU head coach Frank
McCarthy. We contested their shots and held them to 12 percent from the field. I was,
however, a little concerned with the amount of offensive boards we gave up, but that is the
nature of playing zone.
Blake, a native of Shelley, Idaho, converted six-of-12 from the floor and added an assist, a
block and a steal. Also in double-figures for MSU were Amy Meckling with 18 points,
including an 11-of-11 effort from the free throw line and Isabel Stubbs with 13 points and
seven rebounds.
It was crucial to establish our inside game, early, McCarthy said. That's something we didn't
do in Missoula last month. Jess (Blake) and Isabel (Stubbs) made their first couple of baskets
and that gave them tremendous confidence the rest of the game. I thought everyone
contributed to the victory and it was nice to see Rebecca Alvidrez back in the line-up.
Alvidrez, who played 17 minutes after sitting out the past four games with an ankle injury, notched two points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
In the second half, MSU built their largest lead of the game at 42-26 on a Stubbs basket with12:22 remaining. However, the Lady Griz answered back and cut the deficit to 52-48 with a22-10 run, following a Brooklynn Lorenzen field goal. On the next possession, Blake took anoffensive rebound from Stubbs and hit a baseline jumper to secure the win for the Bobcatswith 2:02 left.
Montana was paced in the loss by Laura Valley with a team-high ten points and six rebounds.
MSU will travel to Sacramento State on Thursday.
