Final Entry
Hello Bobcat fans! Well, it is time to put away the jerseys and get back to the gym. We had agreat start to the tournament, but couldn't pull together to outplay Sacramento State in thesemifinals. We are disappointed and can't quite believe we won't be suiting up again.
However, we have spring ball to build on a few key things and get ready to bring home a BigSky Conference banner next year. That goal will never disappear from our minds and it isespecially important to me, since this coming fall will be my senior year. I will do everything tomake this happen.
We had a good trip and the good-luck Bon Voyage cheer we got leaving the fieldhouse was
so nice. We really got a chuckle, because you guys were so enthused. The plane rides were
good, it actually took more time to get our rental cars then the total flight time. It took so long
in fact that a couple of us were busted smelling ourselves by an older man who giggled and
said, .. well, at least you know now. We were fairly embarrassed but we moved on. This
then led to the fastest meal ever, as we were so hungry and needed to eat before practice.
Eating a full meal in seven minutes was quite impressive and practice went okay.
Game day took forever, but it proved worthwhile when we won and had total control for most
of the match.
Semifinal time came again and we really didn't play that terrible, Sacramento State really
played a good game. We couldn't get them out of system enough times to help ourselves, but
we did learn from it and we can now work hard in spring ball so we can take care of business
next season.
After the game, Lorraine's parents took us to an amazing restaurant called the Rusty Duck and
had super desserts. We rose a water glass to our seniors and then went back to the hotel to
pack up.
The trip home was long, we flew stand-by and some got in early, while others waited and got
home before midnight. Nothing overly exciting occurred and now we regroup, finish our
classes and really give it in the spring. We are an amazing team with talent that will be
unleashed and we will bring Montana State University a conference championship in 2002.
Entry 13 (11-15-01)
Hello fans! Well, we finished the regular season with a win against the Grizzlies. What a nice
way to continue the streak heading into conference playoffs.
The team had a good week of practices, showing bruises and being practice targets. Just ask
the redshirts, they took a few for the team.
The match Friday brought no surprises and neither did the bus ride home-- for the first time
ever.
The weekend was a good time for everyone to rest their muscles and a good controlled
practice on Sunday got us all together and focused on the task at hand. Falin (Schaefer) and I
watched A Knight's Tale and really got us pumped-- movies will do that to us. When they
played We Are The Champions we visualized our victory dance at conference.
That is where our team is headed. We are focused this week on keeping our minds and bodies
on the right track so we can accomplish our goal and become Big Sky champs.
Entry 12 (11-7-01)
Hi fans! Thank you so much for your support this past weekend and for the whole season.
You made an amazing atmosphere to play in and we are very grateful to you all.
This weekend was full of surprises. Friday night we came out tough against Northern Arizona
but couldn't finish the game off. That has been a bit of trouble for us this season. However, we
were determined to not let this loss get in our way Saturday night.
A bit of a game day change on Saturday allowed us to focus better on the task at hand and,
here we are, victorious over the Hornets. We came out very strong and focused the first two
games, pushed through the third, but finalized game four and came out on top. It is a great
victory for us heading into conference tournament play. But first, we have a stop in Griz
territory this Friday.
It was an eventful weekend for a couple of our players. Two seniors on our team played their
last matches in Shroyer Gym. Julia Handwerk had a solid match Saturday, which displayed her
talent and hard work over her five-years at MSU. We will always remember her intensity, her
diving skills and the infamous guns that shoot out in a game. Juls, thanks for everything and
good luck in the future.
Lorraine Morrison also competed for the last time in Shroyer. She had a great weekend, doing
her job to dish out a bunch of assists and get her many digs. She graced us with her swervy
ace dance that used to happen last year and she always tried to push for good things to happen
at practice and in games.
Both seniors have made a mark in Bobcat history and we hope that the rest of our season will
accomplish some goals for them and the team.
We are very ready to compete against the Griz and keep our streak going entering the
tournament. Thanks again for all the support this season. You were FAN-tastic.
Entry 11 (11-1-01)
Hey fans! Well, we are glad to be back home. Our weekend on the road was quite eventful.
Our win at Weber State really felt good. We put ourselves in position to win every game and
we came out victorious.
Our Idaho State match was another story. For some reason we came out flat and nothing got
us out of our funk. We do know that this week will be important. We will prepare and bring
our level of play to the court. Conference play is winding down and we can still reach our goal
of champions.
The last road trip proved to have many funnies. When we are around each other it is inevitable.
To start off, the bus ride was one big continuous movie and an occasional snort would come
from Anne (Watts), who really let herself loose.
We had an amazing pre-game in Ogden. We had our trainer Kelly get doused with avoli sauce
(a nice mixture of mustard and mayonnaise). The waiter, ever so talented, dropped a bowl of
the sauce, which proceeded to splat all over Kelly's face, eyes, sweater, etc. Then, if that
wasn't bad enough, the waiter comes back with some kind of spot remover and before he
asks, sprays her down, waits a minute, then rubs it off. It turns out it must have been a white
bleach of some sort as it wrecked her sweater with huge clumps of white all over her back.
What a first trip for Kelly!
At the match against Weber State, Megan (Zanto) crimped her hair and a noisy fan kept
calling her Punky Brewster. She then continued to tell people we were from Montana
Bozeman State. So much for all her cheerleading. During the match against Weber State, Julia
(Handwerk) got so involved in the game that she actually lost her shoe after a heated play.
Everyone could see her shoe lying by the scorers' table and she quickly informed the ref I lost
my shoe. After that, she tied it a little tighter.
Sarah (Smith) was a little more vocal, especially when trying to open a patio door-- funny thing
is there is a security bar that needs to be lifted. She figured it out, eventually. However, her
collapsible bed was the real test. She passed the test by just using the mattress.
We then had a quick trip home after our match at Idaho State. We once again watched
movies, while some people slept or did homework. Some people were kept awake by a
mysterious odor and we learned that Kamber (Kelly) and Anne have detective noses.
However, the mystery remains unsolved. Spidey (Lisa Webb) cracked some jokes that put
Chris Rock to shame.
We're looking forward to our final home matches of the season, this weekend, and hope you
all turn out in big numbers to cheer us on to victory.
Entry 10 (10-17-01)
Hey fans! Well, what a weekend. Once again, you guys were super. It is so awesome to have
a crowd who is so into the game. It really makes an atmosphere to be envied.
This weekend was interesting. We came out strong on Friday against Eastern Washington--
we even had our redshirts doing some new cheers that they learned from the cheerleaders on
the float during the homecoming parade-- however, we just couldn't put it away. It was
disappointing, we should have done it, especially in regards to our team missing a member. I
think Coach Wags and Coach Miya did a super job preparing us and taking the team in the
right direction.
Saturday was a better day. Everyone was ready to play Portland State and take care of
business right away. We came out and pushed through every point. Our slow start in game
three was scary, but we showed perseverence and that is key.
We have a few games left and our conference is anybody's to take. We have a road trip this
weekend and then home for a big weekend.
Hopefully, everyone continues to remain healthy throughout this stretch and we will take care
of our business and finish conference play with a bang.
Entry 9 (10-17-01)
Hey ‘Cat Fans! We are back in it! What a wonderful weekend. You can only feel good after a
homecoming like that. First, our win, then the football team! Way to go.
An extra special thanks to all of the fans at Shroyer Gym. You guys crashed the record and
brought such an electric environment. Wow! It is hard to scan the crowd while playing, but I
kept telling the girls, can you hear that, it was amazing.
Well, the game speaks for itself. Our team is so happy, we are ready for more. We came out
and executed, we played our hearts out and it is too bad it was the Grizzlies who received our
get- back game. It wouldn't have mattered who we played, we were ready to compete and
no one was going to get in our way.
It is good to know we are back at Shroyer this coming weekend to play Eastern Washington
and Portland State. I hope everyone can make it out to the game.
We are going to have a good week of practice and lifting, as well. Coach Tuds (strength
coach) is trying to get us buff-- all we ask for is that he keeps his salty licorice to himself as we
don't need any of the repercussions.
Entry 8 (10-9-01)
Hi fans! Well, we are back home in the comfort of Shroyer Gym and ready to continue our
fight.
We had an interesting weekend. Being together at 5 a.m. Thursday morning really got the ball
rolling. It is always nice to guard over those who sprall out over the airport carpet and catch a
few more winks. After a round-a-bout flight we arrived in Sacramento and slept. We then had
a decent practice, ate and went to bed. The next morning was Karin's (Lundqvist) birthday so
we sang, then she sang in Swedish and then we got on with game day. Our match was tough--
we tried to get things going, but it didn't quite happen. We were determined to change things
around.
We then left for Flagstaff, Arizona. We got their in plenty of time and ate at a Cracker Barrel.
It was super and while we waited for the coaches, we sat outside in homemade rockers.
Jaime, our trainer, decided to try out a smaller chair, and while I laughed at her, I decided to
see if I could fit in one, as well. It was like it was made for me! It was so exact that if I didn't
contort my body to free my ‘cheeks,' I could actually stand with the rocker still attached.
After that we went to the gym, took a walk and some girls had troubles as flying wasn't to
good to them. Spidey (Lisa Webb) had a few trips with her sandals, but she recovered nicely.
The match against Northern Arizona was a lot better. We competed and put ourselves in
position to win the match. We didn't quite follow through, but we are back in our competitive
mode and our level of play is returning.
The bus ride back to Phoenix was quick and we really go to see a new side of Nicki
(Sadowski). Waking up for her has some really awesome moments, from her short spikey hair
to another rumble that leaves you asking questions!
We are happy to be home and will rise to the occasion. ‘Cat-Griz this weekend is going to be
good and the team can't wait to see everyone out again to cheer us on. We appreciate your
support and hope to see you on the court.
P.S. We met a lot of people on the plane. Ask Lorraine (Morrison) about her shoulder
companion-- such a snuggly guy!
Entry 7 (9-26-01)
Hi fans! Well, what a weekend. First of all, we want to thank all the fans who came to Shroyer
Gym this weekend. You are amazing and really get us going.
Friday started off wonderful. The team was ready to go and knew what we had to do. The
crowd was awesome and we played as a team. We really were on the way to doing a lot of
things right. Spirits were high in the locker room and we were happy with the win taking us to
12-0. We knew however, Saturday's match was going to be competitive.
Saturday came and we all were anticipating the game. We knew we needed to play our game
to be successful. Well, as most know, we didn't compete to the best of our ability and Weber
did a nice job of exposing our shortcomings.
We all took the loss pretty hard. It was tough to lose at home, especially in front of so many
fans, who were rooting for us.
This makes room for work. We always have things to do, but this brings back reality and
hopefully we come together like we have so many times before and regroup so we can play
our game this coming weekend at Sacramento and NAU.
Again, special thanks to all the fans and to the G-Force for cheering us on even after our
match Saturday. Your support is greatly appreciated.
I'll tells you what, (frequently heard line which sticks out to non-Montanans) that we will do
our job this weekend and with your enthusiasm, be ready to give it our all ‘Cat-Griz
homecoming weekend.
Entry 6 (9-26-01)
Hey fans! It is great to be home. It was a super weekend with many exciting moments. We are
so happy to be coming home with an 11-match win streak. We couldn't be happier and more
confident getting ready to play in front of you this weekend as we try to defend our home
court.
This past weekend the team really pulled together and rallied to win some close matches. We
stayed strong and did what we had to do with Portland State, who battled every step of the
way.
Then there was Eastern Washington. We all played so well. It was an absolute team effort with
everyone contributing to the best of our ability. During the match we all were confident and
trusted each other to do their job. We believe that is key to our team accomplishing anything.
Enough about volleyball, with a long road trip we had some key events happen off the court.
First of all, Portland is a city which doesn't allow diets. An amazing restaurant where Coach
takes us is BJ's Bar and Grill. This is where they serve an amazing dessert; The Pazooki! It's a
warm cookie served to perfection and topped off with vanilla bean ice cream. Mmmmmmm...
Good thing it was the night before the game, since we all rolled out of the restaurant.
Portland is also where Lisa Webb received her new nickname, Spidey! Anyway, it took a
certain freshman setter a few minutes to make the connection, and when she did, the whole
gym knew. To those who need help, the nickname...Spidey Webb/Spider Webb.
We left for Eastern Washington on Saturday, a quick flight, and when we got to the hotel Lisa
(Webb) and I took off to our room, which was no where near the rest of the team. As we
inched closer to the door, we saw a wheel chair sign. To our total amazement the bathroom
was the size of our locker room with a toilet to match. Lisa and I could hardly contain
ourselves and slowly inched our way back to the hotel front desk to see if we were supposed
to be in that room.
The win at Eastern was definitely a peak for us, we acted like the Stanley Cup was ours. Our
emotions were running and the thought of us really finishing the games on the road made us
very happy.
Gonzaga was a good win. We proved strong overall and did what we needed to do. The bus
ride home was pretty uneventful. We watched Lonesome Dove, all four tapes. Actually, the
coaches and Lola (Lorraine Morrison) watched and the rest of us slept. Getting home at 3
a.m. was nice and I am happy to say I'm glad I didn't have an eight o'clock class, although I
was up at 8:10 anyway.
Well, we are on a roll and playing in Shroyer treats us well. I hope, as well as the team, to see
as many of you at the match as possible.
Once again, thanks for your support!
Entry 5 (9-14-01)
Hello Bobcat fans! Well, as you have heard, we have canceled our trip to Florida. Due to the
great tragedy that has occurred, it is best to stay put and consider how lucky we are to be
where we are.
Everyone is a little taken aback by the news and disappointed we won't be playing in a great
tournament. However, we realize that a weekend off to send support to families throughout
America and a little extra study time is time well spent.
Hopefully, things will start to get put back together and we will be on the road next week for
our conference opener. Take care.
Entry 4 (9-10-01)
Hi fans! What a wonderful weekend we had at the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic. Finishing off
the weekend 8-0 is an awesome feeling. You guys were amazing. The feeling of playing at
home in front of such a receptive and energetic crowd is worth millions! You definitely keep
things exciting.
We had a great week. Practices leading up to the Holiday Inn Classic were focused and gave
us a chance to work-out details and get our legs back. It also was good to be back with our
freshmen redshirts. I am sure Bricks (Brix?) Is glad to be on the court (Megan Zanto adopted
a new name). The other two probably needed a break from all the phone calls they were
receiving.
Anyway, after a few days of getting back into the swing of things with school, practice and
lifting, everyone was ready to play volleyball again.
Everyone was ready to put our skills back to the court, where everything is so familiar. Unlike
driving a car. Just ask Karin (Lundqvist), who amazingly enough had a little trouble
distinguishing what the abbreviated letters on the shifter stood for. Who knew that N meant
neutral and not normal driving! We are happy to get her out of that situation and back to the
court where she can run whatever she needs.
It was also nice to see many parents and friends at the matches, as well. The cheers from
behind our bench are also loved, especially the occasional Go Saskatchewan and Yahoo!
It is also fun to celebrate birthdays. I won't mention names, but #10's mom turned a wonderful
40, I mean 29. She even got the astounding telegram at Applebee's and complimentary B-Day
sundae, which ended up on the bill as a $1 charge. That by the way is almost $3.50 in
Canadian currency. Anyway, the chocolate sauce looked like it was worth it.
The weekend was full of usual happenings. Our first pre-game meal as a team ended up being
three of us, then one not getting a ride because of numerous confusing phone calls, plus road
rage after setter practice and construction downtown. However, everyone ate and we played a
great match.
The highlight of the tournament was of course our fourth consecutive Holiday Inn Classic
victory. Also, the honors of all-tournament team mentions to Falin and myself, plus Karin
receiving MVP kudos. All three of us were very appreciative of the awards and Karin even
thought that bowing to the presenters was the diplomatic thing to do, just as she did in Valpo.
We are so proud of her!
Entry 3 (9-3-01)
Hi Bobcat fans! We are back and ready to compete in Shroyer Gymnasium. Coming home
with a 5-0 record is amazing and we are ready to detail out some things so we can defend our
title as Holiday Inn Classic champions!
In case you didn't notice, I will be writing my entries after each weekend, that way I can
document our trips for you.
Well, the long weekend was super. We had a long day of traveling, but everyone rested and
listened to music, etc. However, as all trips evolve, we were bound to have some funnies.
Surprisingly, the tournament went by fast a Valparaiso. With a few trips down the candy aisle
(snacks for between games) and fruit also, we stuck to our game strategies and won the
tournament. We received a beautiful plaque. Karin (Lundqvist) and Lorraine (Morrison) were
named to the all-tournament team and it was an honor and surprise for me to be named
tournament MVP. We each received a hooded Crusader sweatshirt and I also received a
plaque. We were quite pleased with our play.
We then moved on to play Chicago State. Here, things began. Coach Wags is a little hard on
translations and may need a dictionary-- just ask him about Nadia's Workout Center! Also,
for some reason, his van always needed gas! Yes, fuel. It was all to familiar to see a van pull
up beside Coach Gantt, give the gas signal, then pull ahead for all to follow. However, when
no signal is given and a van veers off with no directions, we decided to let them do their thing.
Amazingly enough, ten minutes later they show up and they had gas. Anyway, getting lost is
usually an hourly event, so they did beat that record.
It has been quite a physical trip with five matches in four days, but we prevailed and pushed
through any tribulations we faced.
The new travelers (Nicki and Kamber) adjusted well to game routines and hotel living. We has
lots of first-time questions that are easy to answer, usually.
We are proud and excited to be returning home with a 5-0 record. We hope to see everyone
out this weekend. GO ‘CATS!
Entry 2 (8-25-01)
Hello fans! Well, week two is over and three-a-days are coming to an end. This is an exciting
moment for our team as we know we are closing in on match play. This Saturday is going to
be wonderful, since we finally put our best six players forth to begin our best season yet.
As a quick side-note, we have had some questions as to what is the Beep Test. Well, it is
basically an endurance test. We run the width of two volleyball courts, sideline to sideline, with
the beat of beeps coming from a tape played on Coach's Super Woofer Stereo. As the beeps
increase in speed, so must we. Each time reaching the opposite sideline with the beep. Three
failures to match your stride with the beep and you're out. Basically, you run until you drop- so
we say.
Anyway, everyone enjoyed the scrimmage we had last week and we would like to thank all
the fans who came out to the open gym, we really appreciate the support. If you attended you
may have witnessed Megan Zanto's wonderful ball-off-her-head play, which is a continuous
tally since it seems to be a regular play for her in the blocking drills. Everyone needs to take
one for the team once in awhile!
Just as an update, all Bobcats are officially back in town, Karin (Lundqvist) has returned from
Sweden. It is nice to have her back and breakfasts are now complete with her ritual song
humming/singing that most of us know so well.
Not only has Karin made the team complete, but between session the All-America Cafe
television has kept us entertained (much better than entertaining ourselves). We get to watch
quality Disney programs, which always leave us with a healthy moral to go the gym. The last
couple of days the TV has been broke so we are a little behind with our daily affirmations.
Not only does the TV seem to entertain us, but so does the dessert line at the cafeteria. Never
fear, when the team is around many grab a snack hoping the treats are invisible to the
coaches. However, we notice when Coach Gantt takes Carrot Cake three days in-a-row. It is
very common to see a little extra icing missing from some desserts, that's only because we
work off so many calories that we need to maintain our weight somehow.
Anyway, to say the least, things are excellent on and off the court. The team is really shaping
into something extraordinary. In addition, we would like to file an informal request for some
type of team sponsorship from the infamous Beano company. Many members of the team
would greatly appreciate it (I hope no explanation is need for this!).
Entry 1: (8-17-01)
We're back Bobcat fans! It has been a quick summer, but all Bobcats are ready to begin our
quest for the Big Sky Conference championship.
As a returning player, I can confidently say that the team is on the right track for success. It is
easy for me to say since the three-a-day routine is not new to me, or a few others on the team.
However, our five freshman may have other thoughts.
Our player/parent potluck set the tone for the team. It was our first Bobcat get-together, minus
a few Bobcats who didn't get the venue change call. Being one of those few, I dealt with it, as
did Falin (Schaefer), we were just glad it wasn't a freshman, plus something strange always
happens when our team gets together.
At the potluck, everyone immediately joked around and the look on the new girls faces when
our schedule was passed around was precious. The Beep Test always raises a few
eyebrows. Questions and butterflies were flying. However, everyone did very well and have
adjusted wonderfully.
It is amazing the amount of talent that the coaches have brought in. These girls are not only
super people, but are amazing athletes and adapt very quickly to everything they observe and
are told.
There are of course a few mix-ups. Names being given to stretches- Meggie (Malyurek) loves
the Leaning Dog, it is actually Downward Dog, for all Egoscue (conditioning workout)
veterans. Even though we have just begun, muscles have taken abuse and ice is a sure friend of
ours. You know we are a close team when a couple of girls hop in the ice-cold tub (in the
training room) and get blue lips together, while quietly humming as if to warm the water.
Every day we learn new stories how someone got their nickname, Lola (Lorraine Morrison) orwhy the new girls are called Worm and Popeye, not Meggie or Megan (Zanto). There arelots of questions about traveling, coaches, boys and food, but we all fit very well together andthis is key for our goal to be Big Sky champions.
So, for the first week, the MSU Bobcat volleyball team is looking fabulous! Everyone isputting everything on the line and is just amazing. I may be biased, but when we are doingthings three days into training that we weren't doing as intensely at day ten last year, you canonly feel good about the program.
