points to guide three Bobcat players in double-figures and givehead coach Robin Potera her first-victory at MSU with a68-57 victory over Southern Utah, Monday night.
Stubbs, a 6-foot-2 native of Ayr, Australia, connected onseven-of-eight from the field and chipped in four rebounds, aswell. Also in double-digits for the Bobcats were Jessica Blake12, and Cassie Johnson with ten. Montana State (1-1) was ledunder the boards by Rebecca Alvidrez with seven rebounds.
She also recorded a game-high eight assists.
On the night, the Bobcats shot a red-hot 54 percent from the
field, but were outrebounded by Southern Utah (0-2) 35 to 30.
I think we had a mental let-down without Jinnifer Jeresek out there for us, Potera said,
referring to a knee injury that sidelined the MSU senior. We didn't box out or play
fundamentally sound basketball. At times we lacked aggressiveness, but the bottom line is that
we won.
MSU built a 16-8 advantage in the opening period at the 11:32 mark on a Kati Burrows field-
goal. The Thunderbirds answered to close to within 19-16, before Montana State rattled off
an 8-0 run to take a 27-16 margin at the three-minute mark on a Johnson jumper from
17-feet. The Bobcats entered halftime with a 29-21 lead.
I thought we played a pretty decent first half from a shooting aspect, Potera said. However,
we gave up 14 offensive boards, and if we want to be successful, we can't let the other team
get a rebounding advantage on the offensive glass.
In the second stanza, Montana State built their largest lead of the game at 62-46 with 4:19
remaining on a pair of Alvidrez free throws. Southern Utah could get no closer than 11 points
down the stretch.
The Thunderbirds were led in the loss by Sally Johnson with 16 points, while Caroline Heaton
added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
We'll definitely be ready for our tournament this weekend and I guarantee we'll give a lot
more effort, Potera said. We have two very solid squads coming in this weekend and it
should be an exciting tournament.
MSU will host the GranTree Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 23-25, featuring Ole Miss and UW-Milwaukee.
