Bobcat Women Almost Take Bit Out of Dawgs

Washington's Guiliana Mendiola scored a game-high 22 points, including eleven points inovertime to lift the No. 19 ranked Huskies to a 73-65 win over Montana State University,Friday night.
Montana State senior Jinnifer Jeresek hit a three-pointer from the top of the key as timeexpired in regulation to force overtime. The Bobcats trailed 56-46 with 4:42 remaining in thegame, before MSU rattled off a 13-3 run behind six points from Jeresek. The Huskiesoutscored Montana State 14-6 in the extra period.
I believe in moral victories and this was one, said MSU head coach Robin Potera, whocoached her first game with the Bobcats. I'm honored to be the coach of this team. Theyplayed with so much heart and determination. It was an unbelievable effort.
Mendiola, a sophomore from Lake Forest, Calif., hit six-of-nine from the field, including a
four- of-five effort from beyond the three-point arc. UW sophomore and Bozeman High
School product Andrea Lalum finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Kellie O'Neill
also reached double-digits with 16 points. Loree Payne, a native of Havre, Mont., finished
with nine points on a three-of-13 from the field.
Montana State (0-1) was led by Isabel Stubbs with 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Jeresek and Rebecca Alvidrez finished with 11 and ten points, respectively. Alvidrez, who was
the Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year last winter, also added a game-high eight
assists and three steals. Senior Jessica Blake led all players under the boards with a game-high
16 rebounds.
The Bobcats opened the game on a 9-4 run following an
Alvidrez three-pointer, before Washington (0-1) answered with
an 11-3 run to take a 15-12 advantage at the 8:02 mark of the
first half. A Jeresek field-goal at the 5:34 mark gave MSU a
18-15 lead, before the Huskies tied the score at 18-all on anEmily Autrey three-pointer. MSU entered intermission with a22-20 advantage.
It was an unbelievable atmosphere and I couldn't have askedfor anything more from our players, Potera said. We certainlyhave things to work on, but I think we can have a verysuccessful season.
Montana State will host Southern Utah University on Monday night.
