last two seasons and a former quarterback at Portland State University, has been hired as
offensive coordinator at Montana State University, Bobcat coach Mike Kramer announced
Saturday.
Bailey joined Larry Welsh’s staff at Cal Poly prior to the 1999 season, and in addition to
coordinating the offense coached quarterbacks and receivers. His Mustang offense was 42nd
in the nation last year, but Cal Poly was 15th among the 122 Division I-AA schools in passing
offense. Cal Poly averaged 271.3 yards a game passing, completed 56.2% of its passes,
finished eighth in the nation with 8.38 yards per attempt, and tied Florida A&M for the nation’s
second-best touchdown-to-interception ratio (3.25-to-1).
"Don Bailey’s expertise and experience, and my familiarity with where he’s been and who he’s
worked with, are his strongest assets," Kramer said. "His background dovetails nicely in that
both Don and (MSU defensive coordinator) Pete Kwiatkowski worked for Pokey Allen, and
Pokey was a coach that knew how to get a lot out of a little. When he had the opportunity to
work in a situation where he had some assets at Boise State, not only did they flourish but they
achieved. Don Bailey’s background with Pokey Allen and Al Borges, and the comfort level
that Pete had with him, made him a very attractive candidate."
Bailey has been at Cal Poly for the past two seasons after one year as offensive coordinator at
Cheyney (Pa.) University. He began his coaching career at Portland State, his alma mater,
coaching receivers in 1991-92, then moved with Pokey Allen to Boise State the next year,
working with tight ends from 1993-96. He coached quarterbacks and receivers coach at
Shepherd (W.V.) College in 1997-98.
Kramer said Bailey will be allowed and able to make signifcant changes in the Bobcat offense.
"The differences will be pretty expansive. We will make an increased, demonstrative effort to
be as good a passing team as we can be. Our emphasis throughout the spring will be to gain
confidence in our passing game. I know our running game will take care of itself because of the
growth of our offensive line and the presence of Ryan Johnson, Camron King and Vernon
Williams."
Bailey was a first team all-conference quarterback at Wenatchee (Wash.) Valley College fortwo years, and later was a second team All-WFC signal caller at Portland State (1989-90).After earning his degree from Portland State in 1991, Bailey played quarterback for twoseasons (1992-93) with the Dallas Texans of the Arena Football League.
Bailey replaces Kramer as MSU’s offensive coordinator, and will also coach receivers atMSU. He is expected to arrive in Bozeman to begin his duties late this week.
