Northern's Smith Transfers to Montana State

Conference accolades at Montana State University-Northern last season, will transfer toMontana State University-Bozeman to play for the Bobcat women's basketball team,announced MSU head coach Frank McCarthy. Smith will sit out next season with theBobcats, and then will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Jana is a very solid player, who possesses a tremendous work-ethic, McCarthy said. We'reexcited to have her as part of our program. She will give us added depth at the wing positionand she'll also have the opportunity to learn our system during a redshirt year.
Last winter, Smith led the Skylights in scoring, averaging 15 points per game, while chipping in4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest, as well. She tallied a season-high 38 points againstthe Master's College. Smith also attempted more free throws than any other player in theNAIA ranks, and finished 13th in the nation, shooting 82 percent from the line. She also shot45 percent from the field and converted 37 percent from three-point territory on the season.
Jana has a good feel for the game, McCarthy said. She does a great job going to the basketand getting herself to the free-throw line. I really like her aggressive approach to the game.
Smith prepped at Ronan High School where she averaged 23 points, eight rebounds, threesteals and three assists per game for the Maidens as a senior. Smith was a two-time all- stateselection in basketball and track, while garnering academic all-state recognition on 11occasions. She was named to the Montana-Wyoming all-star roster and was a member of theTreasure State Classic all-star team, as well. During her senior year at Ronan, she placedsecond in the long jump and third in the high jump at the state track and field championships.
Smith joins Ember Harberts, Kati Burrows, Rebecca Alvidrez and Jessica Blake asnewcomers on the MSU roster. McCarthy will look to sign one more athlete during the springsigning period.
