Entering with a sub-.500 record as a team just a weekago, the Bobcats rolled to the top seeding in theMountain Regionals and topped the tournament field atthe championships to win their first-ever Big SkyChampionship. MSU finished the season 12-10, whileSacramento State goes home 19-9.
The championship seemed destined to land in Bobcathands in the title match Saturday, with the #1 doubles
team of Thijs Goossens and BJ Hauck blazing back
from a 5-0 deficit to win 9-7 and help MSU take the
doubles point. In singles, Goossens again worked some
magic, rebounding from a first-set loss to take out
Sylvain Iff and his 21-4 record, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the semifinal win by Sacramento State over Weber
State, Benny Anderson helped stave off elimination by turning around a 6-2 deficit in the
third-set tiebreaker to win. This time, however, Anderson could muster no magic, as Kevin
Reeder overwhelmed the Hornets' #6 singles player 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the championship.
Reeder was the top Bobcat player in terms of record, with an 8-2 mark. In addition, his
doubles team with Kris Hauck was 9-0 in the season.
With the win, Montana State earns a berth in the NCAA Tennis Championships, the finals of
which will be held at the University of Georgia May 20-28.
