All-America candidate Katie Douglas and cashed in on 17 firsthalf Montana State University turnovers, as the Boilermakers
posted an 86-61 victory over the Bobcats at the Torneo
Cancun de Basquetbol, Saturday night.
I'm proud with the way our team handled the pressure, said
MSU head coach Frank McCarthy, referring to Purdue's
full-court defense. I thought Rebecca Alvidrez played out of
her mind and Amy Meckling was very impressive as well. We
had good balance from all of our kids. We have gotten so much
better over the course of the weekend and we'll just continue to
improve.
Montana State (0-3) jumped out to an early 13-10 lead, before
Purdue went ahead 14-13 on a pair of Douglas free throws at
the 14:13 mark. Purdue (4-1) then went on a 27-13 run over the next ten minutes, taking a
41-26 lead following a field-goal by Mary Jo Noon. The Boilermakers entered intermission
with a 47-29 advantage, behind 14 points from Douglas and ten from Noon.
In the second stanza, Purdue built the margin to 65-44 on a basket by Shinika Parks.
However, Meckling countered with six consecutive points to pull the Bobcats to within 67-50
with 9:10 remaining in the game. MSU maintained a 17-point deficit after another Meckling
field-goal put the score at 72-55 with 6:30 left. Purdue the outscored Montana State 14-6
down the stretch for the victory.
Montana State was paced in the loss by Meckling, who tallied a season-high 23 points,
including an eight-of-14 effort from the field. Also scoring in double-digits for MSU was Isabel
Stubbs. Stubbs, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Ayr, Australia, chipped in 12 points and four
rebounds. For the game, MSU shot a red-hot 55 percent from the floor, but was only
18-of-33 from the field for the game. Purdue out- rebounded the Bobcats 40-28, and forced
MSU into 30 turnovers.
Purdue is quicker, more physical and taller, but I thought we really played hard and battled,
McCarthy said. We shot 55 percent against the No. 4 team in the nation, and I think that'spretty good. Purdue started to wear us down at the end, but overall, I'm pleased with oureffort. It's only going to make us better for Big Sky Conference play.
Also reaching double-figures for Purdue were Noon with 14, while Camille Cooper and KellyKomara added 12 points, apiece. The Boilermakers shot 50 percent from the floor, converting34-of-68 shots.
Montana State will host the University of Portland, Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:05 p.m., in WorthingtonArena.
