Laya Breaks Career Dig Record as Bobcat Spikers Top Northridge

school record for digs as well as knock down 19 kills to lift the Bobcat volleyball team to a12-15, 15-6, 15-7, 14-16, 15-10 victory over Cal State Northridge, Saturday night.
Laya, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Ranchester, Wyo., broke the old mark of 1,073 digsheld by Mindy Nowak. Laya broke the record in game two and finished the match with 1,079career digs. She also led Montana State (18-5, 8-4) hitting .348 from the floor, while addingtwo blocks.
You couldn't have scripted the match any better for Steph Laya, said MSU head coachDave Gantt, referring to the senior's final appearance in Shroyer Gym. I told her after thematch that we're going ride her shoulders for the rest of the season. She really got into a
rhythm and we saw the Steph Laya that was a first-team all-conference performer last season.
Also hitting double-figures for the Bobcats were Anne Watts and Aimee Halyk with 21 and 17
kills, respectively. Halyk, a 6-foot outside hitter from Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, also added
career-highs with 19 digs and 11 blocks. Junior setter Lorraine Morrison dished out 57 assists,
while adding a team-high 21 digs. Freshman Karin Lundqvist also set a career-high with 11
blocks.
I thought we had one of our best defensive matches of the season, Gantt said. We made
some unbelievable saves and I thought we did a nice job getting a lot of touches on the block.
Once again the home crowd was outstanding, and now we have to prove our worth away
from Shroyer Gym.
Cal State Northridge (13-7, 7-5) was paced by Laura Szymanski with 18 kills, 16 digs and six
blocks, while Alexis Cormier added 12 kills and a match-high 22 digs.
MSU will play its final four matches on the road, beginning with Weber State University, nextTuesday in Ogden, Utah.
