Hommes and Orr Named Women's Basketball Assistants

Frank McCarthy, has completed his basketball staff with the hiringof Montana natives Blythe Hommes and Brian Orr as assistantcoaches, announced MSU’s Associate Director of Athletics, CalliTheisen Sanders.
Having Blythe continue as a full-time member of my coaching staff
is a tremendous boost to our program, said McCarthy. She is a
great role model for the young women on our team and brings
instant credibility with her success as a player at Montana State
University and as a leader in the Big Sky Conference ranks. Her
Montana contacts will be a tremendous asset in our recruitment of
quality Montana players.
Orr, a former assistant at Montana State University in Billings, returns to McCarthy’s staff after
getting the Argonauts women’s basketball program off the ground at the University of Great
Falls.
I’m so pleased to have Brian back on my basketball staff, McCarthy said. He was a big
part of the success we enjoyed in Billings. Brian has a passion for the game and he loves
Montana. He has a tremendous work ethic, he’s loyal, and he is a wonderful teacher. I’m
happy to be able to surround myself with successful people like Blythe and Brian.
Hommes, a 1998 graduate of Montana State University, was a four-year starter for the
Bobcats. She earned Kodak All-America honorable mention honors and was the 1997 Big
Sky Conference most valuable player. She assisted McCarthy this past year on an interim
basis.
Orr, a Lewistown native, earned his bachelor’s degree in 1982 and his master’s degree in
1997 from MSU-Billings. He was the head girls’ and boys’ basketball coach and athletics
director in Joplin and Simms, and coached the boys’ team at Fergus High School in
Lewistown from 1991-1996. He was honored as the Coach of the Year by the Montana
Coaches Association in 1990 and as Teacher of the Year at Fergus High School in 1996. He
assisted McCarthy in Billings from 1996-98 where together they compiled a 64-23 record,
three conference championships and three consecutive trips to the national tournament. He has
been at the helm of the women’s basketball team at the University of Great Falls for the past
year.
Hommes will continue her responsibilities with the basketball program and Orr will join thestaff in Bozeman on July 1.
