We were consistent with our serve-receive game and that's the one big thing that keeps us in
matches, said MSU head coach Dave Gantt. We're also only as good as our outside hitters
and I thought that Steph (Laya) really did a good job working hard on the details.
Laya, a junior from Ranchester, Wyo., hit .241 for the match and added an ace and three
blocks, while MSU's other outside hitter, Keri Lister, struggled with three kills and a -.200
attack mark.
We'll continue to challenge the outsides to be better in each match, Gantt said. If they can be
effective, it allows us to run our system. And, when we're in our groove, we're hard to stop.
MSU cruised to an early 7-0 lead in game one, before Villanova (2-4) came back to take a
9-8 advantage. The Bobcats then rattled off a 7-3 run and won the game following a Wildcat
hitting error. In game two, the ‘Cats jumped out to an 11-2 margin, before Lister's kill ended
the game. In the final game of the match, MSU once again cruised to a big lead at 11-1, but
VU answered to close to within 13- 9. However, an Aimee Halyk blocked sealed the victory
for MSU.
Villanova was paced by Breen Eddinger with 11 kills, while Ruth Ann Blankenheimcontributed a match-high 14 digs.
The Holiday Inn Classic all-tournament team included; Breen Eddinger, Villanova, RebeccaMeade, Buffalo, Christy Levy, New Orleans, Brooke Olsen, Montana State and StephanieLaya, Montana State.
MSU will play at the Diet Coke Classic at the University of Minnesota next weekend.
