have been named to the 1999 Canadian National Junior Team, which will compete at theworld championships, Aug. 25 - Sept. 5 in Edmonton and Saskatoon. MSU players named tothe squad were Lindsay Stobbs, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Weldon, Sask., and AimeeHalyk, a 6-foot outside hitter from Esterhazy, Sask.
This is a great honor and accomplishment for Lindsay and Aimee, said MSU head coach
Dave Gantt. Both of them worked extremely hard last season and their effort paid off. This
will be a great opportunity for them to gain international experience, as well as, train during the
summer as they head into the fall season.
Stobbs earned a starting spot last season as a freshman and led the Bobcats in blocks per
game at 1.41 per outing. In addition, she averaged 1.62 kills and had a .236 hitting percentage.
Halyk redshirted last season and will have four years of eligibility remaining this fall.
Stobbs and Halyk were chosen from a pool of 37 athletes from across Canada in the 19 and
under age class. Training camp lasted six days, with two-a-day sessions that were three hours
each.
I was extremely pleased with the preparation most of the athletes had done for tryout camp,
said Canadian National Junior coach Frank Enns. The athletes who made the team earned
their way onto the squad. It was a very physical training camp.
Both MSU athletes were sidelined by injuries last summer as they looked to make the juniorteam. The world championships will extend into the first week of the Bobcat season, and theduo will join the Montana State team following the tournament.
Lindsay has always been earmarked by the national coaches as a future star, Gantt said.Aimee made the squad due to her work in the weight room and all-out effort on the court. They're great kids and very deserving to be on the national team.
