McCarthy Tabbed as Interim Head Coach

University-Billings, has been named interim women's head coach at sister institution, Montana
State University-Bozeman, announced Bobcat Associate Athletics Director, Calli Sanders,
who led the search for the position.
I was impressed with the quality of candidates we had for the interim position and Frank
(McCarthy) moved to the head of the list based on his success and experience as a head
coach, Sanders said. We're fortunate to have someone of his caliber commit himself and
accept the position at such a crucial part of the season.
McCarthy, a native of Butte, Mont., coached at Montana State University-Billings the past ten
years and recorded an overall record of 190-90 with the Yellowjackets. Last season,
MSU-Billings posted a 25-6 overall mark and advanced to the Elite Eight at the NCAA
Division II Women's Basketball Championship. The Yellowjackets finished 11th in the final
Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll. En route, McCarthy led his squad to the
NCAA Division II West Regional title and a Pacific West Conference crown. For his efforts,
he was the Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year; Region 8 Coach of the Year; and
was a finalist for National Coach of the Year honors.
I'm excited about the opportunity and challenge, McCarthy said. I have watched the Bobcat
program over the past ten years and I'm familiar with the successful tradition. I know the
players that are from Montana, and I'll need to assess the talent and determine where we go
from here. In talking with the players, I sense great togetherness and everyone is ready to
move on and begin playing.
In addition to his on-court accolades, McCarthy is even more proud of what his Yellowjacket
squads accomplished in the classroom. Last season, MSU-Billings was selected eighth overall
for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll. The team finished the
year with an overall grade-point average of 3.421. Over the past eight years, the MSU-Billings
women's basketball team has a graduation rate of 97.6 percent.
This has been an extremely difficult decision for me, McCarthy said. I appreciate that I've
had the opportunity, and consider it a privilege to coach at MSU-Billings. I feel the position at
MSU-Bozeman offers me an advancement and I can't turn it down professionally or
personally. The hardest thing, and what I'll truly miss, will be the relationships with the
Yellowjacket players.
Prior to coaching at MSU-Billings, McCarthy served as head women's coach at Eastern
Wyoming College in Torrington, and led the Lancers to a 19-11 mark. He also directed the
girls' basketball program at Powell, Wyo., High School for six seasons, from 1982-88, and St.
Labre Indian School, 1981-82.
I'm very pleased that we are able to hire someone of Frank's caliber, said MSU Athletics
Director, Chuck Lindemenn. We had a great pool of candidates and I commend Calli
Sanders, Dan Davies and the women's basketball players for their work over the past week.
Along with assistant coach Tara Harrington, I think we have assembled a quality coaching
staff.
McCarthy earned his bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Eastern
Montana College (MSU-Billings) in 1979, and received a master's degree in sports science
from the United States Sports Academy in 1988. McCarthy and his wife Sherry, have a
two-year-old son, Mckye.
McCarthy will begin his duties with the team next week. Harrington will coach the Bobcat
women's basketball team in their exhibition opener, Monday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m., in the
Worthington Arena against Lokomotiva Bratislava-Slovakia.
