Butch Damberger
- Induction:
- 2023
- Class:
- 1980
A conversation with Bobcat football coach Sonny Holland in the summer of 1976 led Butch Damberger to the Montana State football team, changing the course of Bobcat football history. That visit came after Damberger's MVP effort in the Montana Shrine Game, culminating in an offer to join the Cats as a walk-on. As a freshman that fall Damberger caught four passes - one was a touchdown in MSU’s semifinal win at North Dakota State and another was a score in the National Championship win against Akron. A two-time All-Big Sky and All-America tight end, Damberger’s successful prep coaching career led him back to MSU as an assistant coach in 1992. During the next 11 seasons he mentored nine All-Americas, and since leaving coaching and helping run the building we’re celebrating in tonight he has volunteered at countless athletic events.
