Bobcat offensive lineman's amazing year got even better Saturday
To say the Saturday, April 30, is a day Mike Person will never forget would be understating the issue.
Late in the afternoon, in a hotel room in Billings with his father Jim, Montana State's senior offensive lineman learned he'd been selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Person became the first Bobcat chosen since Joey Thomas in 2004, and the first MSU O-lineman drafted since Larry Rubens in 1982.
And on Saturday night, the Glendive native became the first Bobcat male since Shannon Butler in 1992 to win the Montana AAU Little Sullivan Award, presented to the state's top amateur athlete.
Person joins elite company in winning the Little Sullivan. He is only the seventh Bobcat ever to win the award, joining volleyball player Kandice Kelly (2007), trackster Christy Otte (1998), basketball player Cass Bauer (1994), track national champion Shannon Butler (1992), wrestler Wade Ayala (1986) and football player Mark Fellows (1985).
In fact, only five football players won the award before Person: Fellows and Montana's Dave Dickenson, Vince Huntsberger and Kroy Bierman, and Carroll College's Tyler Emmert.
As for the draft, Person is seeking to join former Bobcat teammate Dane Fletcher, now a New England Patriot, and Tennessee Titans long snapper Ken Amato on NFL rosters. In San Francisco, Person's offensive line coach stands to be Tim Drevno, a Bobcat assistant coach for four seasons in the 1990s under Cliff Hysell.
