MSU redshirts Nick Atwood and Graydon Curry finished one-two overall, while freshman Patrick Casey followed closely on their heels in third.
The invitational was held as an open, which allowed for Atwood and Curry to participate unattached from the rest of the Bobcat squad.
Atwood covered the eight-kilometer course in 24:44, followed by Curry, 25:04 and Casey, 25:12.
“Our guys showed a huge improvement over two weeks ago,” Kennedy said. “We also saw a glimpse of the future with Atwood and Curry back in the line-up.”
Devin McDowell recorded a strong performance for MSU placing seventh overall in 26:07. Also contributing were Carl Nystuen, 12th, 26:18; Kelvin Daratha, 13th, 26:26; Dan Jackson, 19th, 26:50; Chris Baldus, 24th, 27:05, and Forrest Jarvi, 26th, 27:21.
“I was pleased with all of our performances,” Kennedy said. “Devin McDowell really stepped up. As a team, I thought we moved up to a new level.”
The Montana State women’s squad also notched a big improvement from two weeks ago.
Sophomore Morgan Dunley paced the Bobcats finishing eighth overall, with a five-kilometer clocking of 18:48.
“I thought that was the best race of Morgan’s career,” Kennedy said. “She was 40-seconds faster from what she ran on the course at last year’s Big Sky Conference meet.”
Finishing behind Dunley were Kala Jauquet, 13th, 19:02; Heather Haug, 14th, 19:13; Rebecca Sorenson, 15th, 19:19; Lauren Kuennen, 17th, 19:32, Brooke Chavez, 21st, 19:41; Christina Alexander, 29th, 20:11; Katie Gilboy, 38th, 20:35; and Carey Downey, 56th, 21:54.
“I’m proud of our women’s team and how they improved from two weeks ago,” Kennedy said. “We have such a young team, but they’re gaining confidence and experience, and if they keep developing, they’ll be a good team come November.”
