Montana State Harriers Head to Big Sky Conference Championships
10/30/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The women’s five-kilometer race will begin at 11 a.m. (MST), with the men’s eight-kilometer event following at 12 p.m.
“I see it shaking out pretty much the same as the preseason poll,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “Northern Arizona and Weber State are almost a lock for the top two spots, but after that, it’s anyone’s race.”
The NAU men’s squad is currently No. 8 in the nation and is the top ranked team in the Mountain Region. Weber State is ranked sixth in this week’s regional poll, with Montana listed 13th and Montana State 14th.
“We’re coming off a great race at Idaho State,” Kennedy said. “We’ll be in a knock-down drag-out fight with Montana and Eastern Washington.
“If we can get five or six guys in the top half of the field, it’ll be a successful meet,” Kennedy said.
The Bobcats will look for its one-two punch of Patrick Casey and Matt Adams to pace the squad. The duo finished first and second, respectively, at the Idaho State Invitational two weeks ago in Pocatello.
“Getting Matt Adams back into the line-up is a big plus for us,” Kennedy said. “It gives us two solid guys on the front end.
“We also have Devin McDowell, Kelvin Daratha, Dan Jackson, Carly Nystuen and Chris Baldus with Big Sky Conference experience, and hopefully, that will payoff for us on Saturday.”
Also running will be freshman Forrest Jarvi.
According to Kennedy, the Bobcat women will be in a battle with Idaho State and Montana for third place. NAU and WSU are the favorites. The Lumberjacks are ranked No. 29 in the nation.
“Idaho State has really emerged in the last month as a team to beat and Montana will also be in the mix,” Kennedy said. “We have a very inexperienced team; however, they have bought into the ‘Pack Mentality’ and if we can get five or six kids in the top 35 we will certainly have achieved something special.”
Leading MSU will be sophomores Morgan Dunley and Kala Jauquet. Also looking to contribute will be Heather Haug, Rebecca Sorenson, Katie Gilboy, Lauren Kuennen, Brooke Chavez and Corrine Malcolm.
“Our 1-5 runners have been close all season and we’ve had three different kids lead us this fall,” Kennedy said. “We want the top five to be in a 30-second window from each other. We’ll have a great race if we can stay together.”
Following the Big Sky Conference meet, the Bobcats will compete at the NCAA Mountain Regional Nov. 15 in Fort Collins, Colo.
