Kate Cooney begins her first year as an Assistant Director of Media and Digital Relations at Montana State in April, 2026, after serving in a similar role at the University of Oregon. Cooney serves as the primary contact for women's volleyball, basketball, tennis and men's and women's ski. She manages the publicity and day-to-day maintenance of her assigned sports, with responsibilities including writing press releases, game notes, and media guides; maintaining team records; overseeing social media strategy and content creation; coordinating interviews with coaches and student-athletes; and running in-game social media.
A 2025 UO graduate, Cooney is originally from Carpinteria, Calif., near Santa Barbara. Cooney served as primary contact for men’s golf, women’s lacrosse and acrobatics and tumbling during her time as Athletics Communications Assistant at Oregon while also working as the secondary football contact. As an undergraduate, she served as the lead student intern while working with all 18 Ducks varsity teams. Her experience includes assisting with media relations and operations for several post-season baseball, volleyball, softball and track and field events.
Cooney played an integral role in the organization of several championship events in Eugene, including the 2024 and 2025 NCAA Track and Field Championships, the 2025 NCAA Softball Regional and Super Regional and the first round of the 2025 College Football Playoff. Cooney earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication with a sports business minor at Oregon. She was also active in athletics administration at Carpinteria High School, where her father has served for many years as head baseball coach and athletic director.
