Tommy Mellott headlines a cast of Cats heading to the NFL
BOZEMAN, Mont. (April 28, 2025) – Six Montana State football players who exhausted their eligibility last fall extended their careers on the gridiron this week, landing that opportunity with NFL teams.
That total of a half-dozen players is the highest among NCAA Division I FCS schools as of Monday, April 28. North Dakota State, William & Mary and Villanova each landed five players in NFL camps, while UC Davis' four is second-most among Big Sky schools.
Bobcat quarterback Tommy Mellott was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the sixth round on Saturday (the 213th overall selection), becoming Montana State's 34th player selected in the NFL or AFL draft. He joins the Raiders as a quarterback/wide receiver, and a game appearance would make him the second Bobcat to suit up for the Silver & Black, joining fellow MSU legend Ron Warzeka, who played in the team's debut season of 1960.
Five of Mellott's former teammates got into the act by landing rookie mini-camp tryouts. Brody Grebe joins the Vikings, punter Brendan Hall travels to Green Bay, and offensive lineman Marcus Wehr tries out with Seattle. Two former Bobcats who finished their careers at different schools also enter the spring with an NFL opportunity. Offensive lineman Rush Reimer (Cal) signed as an undrafted free agent with Buffalo, and defensive lineman Sebastian Valdez (Washington) joins the 49ers.
