The 'Calgary Comet' excelled at every phase of the game for the 1953, 1954 and 1955 Bobcats
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football season, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here and a directory here.
Harvey Wylie, HB, 1952-55
ALL-TIME TEAM: 1969 Billings Gazette Poll, 2000 Billings Gazette Poll
HONORS: 1st Team All-Rocky Mountain and Honorable Mention Little All-America 1954, 2nd Team All-Rocky Mountain Conference 1955
A CLOSER LOOK: The "Calgary Comet" was described by many outlets in the 1950s as one of Montana State's most colorful players ever. A halfback who also kicked field goals and extra points, he became the first Bobcat in history to score 100 points in a season as a junior in 1954, a school record at the time and the third-highest total in the nation. He was a standout second baseman on the Bobcat baseball team, and was inducted into both the Bobcat Athletics Hall of Fame and the CFL Hall of Fame after a sensation professional career in his hometown of Calgary where he was a CFL All-Start twice, a West Division All-Star twice, and was the league's 1962 Most Outstanding Canadian Player. Wylie was primarily a defensive back as a professional player but also returned at least one kickoff for 100 yards in four straight seasons (1959-62) and logged five career kick returns for touchdowns for the Calgary Stampeders, but as a Bobcat he excelled in every phase of football. He handled field goals and extra points, was the team's primary return man, was a lead ball carrier and pass receiver, and was always known for his work as a defensive back.
FORMER TEAMMATE DARRELL HUETH: "Harvey was really fast, and he had a long career up in Canada. He was a terrific player."
