Johnson continues to battle kidney and heart problems
Former Montana State men's basketball player Martrel Johnson was always known for his strength on the basketball floor. Now Johnson is fighting for his life.
The Las Vegas product received a kidney transplant from his father before his senior season at Durango High School, the result of a coach-ordered physical stemming from difficulty breathing and low energy. The life-changing diagnosis was kidney failure and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. The intervening years have led him down a path of kidney, blood and heart issues.
Johnson was forced by his medical condition to end his career as a Bobcat (2003-05) early. He now lives in Bozeman with his wife Brandi, and has worked with a small army of friends and family members on fund-raisers to help off-set costs of consultations and treatments at the Mayo Clinic. His mother has also worked to raise awareness for matches for a potential future kidney transplant.
"Now it's just fighting," Johnson told the Las Vegas Sun. "I fight every day to figure out what I need to do to survive and beat this. My legacy is that I was a fighter and never gave up, and live life like I always have."
