Montana State cross country will compete with a full squad at the Pre-Nationals Cross Country Invitational hosted by the University of Louisville on Saturday morning. Jake Turner returns to competition after recovering from an injury that occurred the first meet of the season. Diego Leon, the California Community College Athletic Association's 2014-15 Athlete of the Year, has slowly overcome an injury as well and is almost back to full strength this weekend. The 'Cats will look to freshmen to lead the team, with Justice Lamer at the front of the pack. Lamer chalked up two top ten finishes in his first two meets as a Bobcat, placing second at the MSU Invite and seventh in Missoula. Classmates Ty Mogan and Brock Sandry along with sophomore Matt Gotta and senior Ethan Wilhelm for a solid group which should position the team will in the race.
On the women's side, freshmen Alyssa Snyder and Chiara Warner went two-three at the UM Invite and will likely cruise at the front of the team in the loaded seeded race. Kaylee Schmitz, Rachel Atwood, Jenette Northey, Louisa Serpe and Rachel Sullivan will be the key to a good team performance. The women will compete in the seeded race among some of the nation's top individual runners and teams. Six top 30 NCAA team will be in field (2. Colorado, 5. Michigan, 7. Georgetown, 9. Stanford, 24. Oregon, 27. Texas), along with Big Sky Conference member Eastern Washington.
Montana State's men are competing the unseeded race with conference member Weber State.
"This meet will be a great opportunity for the athletes to get a look at the NCAA Championship Course," head coach Lyle Weese said. "
The size and quality of the field will be a great test as the atmosphere will be different than the first two meets. It will be important for the teams to stay composed and focused in the unfamiliar situation."
