Northern Arizona won the opening doubles point, before winning five of six singles matches to post a 6-1 victory over Montana State, Saturday morning in the Anderson Tennis Center.

Northern Arizona won the opening doubles point, before winning five of six singles matches to post a 6-1 victory over Montana State, Saturday morning in the Anderson Tennis Center.

Montana State's lone victory came at No. 4 singles as junior Ellie Crum (Great Falls) posted a straight set 6-4, 6-4 win over NAU's Malia Wahinepio.

“Ellie's been one of our most consistent players this spring,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht. “She did a super job winning in straight sets and has a very work-man-like approach to the game.”

Crum has MSU's only winning record on the season with an 8-5 overall slate. In addition, she is 6-3 at No. 4 singles and 3-2 in Big Sky Conference action.

MSU's No. 1 player Charlotta Hjalmarsson went three sets, before dropping a 7-6, 3-6, 3-6 decision to Hannah Stone. Hjalmarsson, a senior from Sweden, battled back from a first set 4-1 deficit in the tiebreaker, rattling off a 6-1 run to capture the opening set.

At No. 2 singles, MSU's Paulina Lopez was on the verge of forcing a third set, but saw a 5-4 lead evaporate into a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Northern Arizona's Ghizelene Doballah.

“We didn't get a good start with our doubles play, and that trickled over into singles,” Albrecht said. “I thought Char played very tough and Paulina fought, as well. Northern Arizona is a good team. We'll need to regroup for Weber State.”

The Bobcats will host Weber State on Sunday at 9 a.m., in the Anderson Tennis Center.
