Women win, men place third at season opener
The Montana State Cross Country team opened up the 2012 season on their home turf at the Bozeman Running Company MSU Invitational on Saturday and they did it in fine fashion. (Men's Results | Women's Results)
In the 12-team competition, the Bobcat women prevailed as the overall winner, as well as the Division I team champion, with 35 points. Carroll amassed 48 points to win the smaller schools race.
For the men, Weber State took both the Division I and overall first-place finish with 38 points, while MSU-Billings won the small schools division.
Holly Page of Wyoming was the fastest finisher at Bridger Creek Golf Course in the women's race, just under three miles. She crossed the finish line in 17:17.
Montana State was led by one of three veterans when Heather Demorest placed sixth overall in 17:41. Sarah Reiter, in her collegiate debut, was the next highest finisher, coming in 11th, with teammate Megan Beam on her heels in 12th place, clocking in at 18:04 and 18:05, respectively. Rachel Atwood had a top-20 finish in her first race in Blue & Gold, coming in 14th overall. Rachel Sullivan also notched points for MSU, coming in 18th.
For the men, John Coyle, of Weber State, took the individual title in 24:43.
Montana State had three Bobcats in the top-10, helping them to their third place overall. Trevor Polson led the way for MSU placing seventh in 25:13, followed by newcomer Cristian Soratos in eighth (25:17) and Jacob Kirk in ninth (25:25). Michael Asay and Seth Garbett also had top-20 finishes, coming in 13th and 15th respectively to round out the scoring Bobcats.
The Bobcats return to the course on Friday, Sept. 28 at the Montana Invitational in Missoula.
