The Montana State women's tennis team earned its first victory of the season with a 4-3 win over Gonzaga on Saturday night in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Gonzaga jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after taking the doubles point with a 9-7 decision at the No. 3 spot.
Montana State tied the match following freshman Paulina Lopez's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. The Zags took a 3-1 lead with victories at Nos. 2 and 4 singles.
The Bobcats then captured the top spot as Charlotta Hjalmarsson defeated Rika Mehndiratta 7-5, 7-6. Freshman Ellie Crum defeated Sophie Lantta 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to tie the match at 3-3.
The deciding point was all Montana State as Jennifer Coll posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles over Britta Stime to give MSU the win.
“I'm proud of the way our kids battled,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht. “When the match was on the line we looked to our upperclassmen and they delivered. Jennifer Coll has been in the position to decide a match before, and she got the job done again.”
MSU will host Montana on Sunday at 1 p.m., in the BATC.
