Paul Schafer- Football, ‘70
The late Paul Schafer had an outstanding career as a Bobcat tailback from 1968-71, carrying the ball 541 times for 2, 279 yards. He was an honorable mention All-America in 1968 and was an All-Big Sky selection twice. But Schafer’s name will forever be inextricably linked with one glorious afternoon in Missoula. On November 2, 1968, Schafer carried the football a school-record 58 times, gaining 234 yards, and almost single-handedly dragging the Bobcats to a 29-24 win over the Grizzlies. That game helped propel the ‘Cats to their third straight Big Sky title. With MSU trailing 24-9 in the fourth quarter, Schafer scored a TD with 8:15 left, and after a Dennis Erickson TD pass scored the winning points in the last minute for the Bobcat victory.
