“Kelly Bradley went from being a participant (during the 1984 season) to being a catalyst. He carried that football team through some really rough times that year. He never stepped on his bottom lip, he always hung in there, and we all know what the end result was.” – Mike Kramer, current Bobcat head coach and an assistant on the 1984 squad
It doesn’t take someone unfamiliar with Bobcat football long to learn about Kelly Bradley. A decade and a half after his playing career ended, Bradley continues to hold all of MSU’s career passing records. He remains a presence on the Big Sky Conference’s all-time passing lists. And his individual achievements have established him as one of MSU’s all-time greats. But, his ability to lead his team, to engineer important drives, to be The Man for a National Championship team, establish him as a legend.
Bradley led an improbable, thrilling march through November and December of 1984, as the Bobcats stalked what most said was out of their reach. He led his team to the I-AA playoffs with a stunning come-from-behind win over Fresno State, then with laser-like precision sliced through the likes of Arkansas State and Rhode Island and Louissiana Tech for MSU’s third national title.
Bradley threw 30 touchdown passes in 1984, and finished his career with 60 TD passes. He finished his career with 8,152 yards, and still owns 10 MSU passing records.
Although he was slowed by injuries during his final two seasons at MSU, Bradley remains one of the most prolific passers in the history of the Big Sky Conference.
