1993 Women’s Indoor Track
Mountain West Champions
Dale Kennedy has seen some outstanding moments in his quarter-century as Montana State’s track and field coach, but not many top the sight of Denise Clare crossing the finish line ahead o Weber State and Idoho State runners at the 1983 Mountain West Championships in Pocatello.
Kennedy remembers the scene “lit it were yesterday,” he says. Clare’s win gave Montana State its first-ever conference title in the MWAC, which paralleled and would eventually become the Big Sky. It also gave form to what would become Montana State’s outstanding track and field legacy.
Four Bobcats won individual titles, showing of excellence that vaulted the team to its title. Janet Buntin scored 24 points and won the long jump, Mary Lynn Guyer won the 3,000 m, Carrie Alban won the shot put, and Denise Clare won the 600 m. And it was Clare, running the anchor leg of the 4 x 400 m rely, that raced past Weber and Idaho State to clinch the title in the meet’s final event.
