Rob Ash welcomes 94 players to his fifth fall camp
Montana State's first day of practice leading up to the 2011 football season saw the usual degree of enthusiasm, with sophomore quarterback DeNarius McGhee leading the way.
“Ooh, it's been a long time since I've been in live action,” the inimitable McGhee said on his way into the day's first drill. “It's been since the NDSU game (last December). I'm pretty excited, but not too excited.
With 94 Bobcats on hand to open fall camp, the day wasn't without its significant absences. Transfer guard Tyler Thomas, the projected starter at one guard position, informed Bobcat head coach Rob Ash that he was leaving the program on Thursday, while tackle Stephen Memory remains in California with an illness.
Even with a suddenly-thinned offensive line, Ash said McGhee's presence is a good place to start when evaluating the 2011 Bobcats. “This is the first year since I've been here where we haven't had to talk about who the quarterback will be,” Ash said with a laugh. “It's nice. DeNarius gives us a high degree of confidence, and we also have confidence in Grayson Galloway after his solid spring.”
While Ash has said he'll evaluate a number of position battles throughout camp, X's and O's and depth charts aren't on the top of his priority list. “We'll work hard to build up the team element of the program,” Ash said. “We'll work to identify leadership. I sense a lot of determination in this team.”
MSU practices at 9:15 am Saturday on the MSU practice fields.
