The Montana State volleyball squad matched its win total from all of last season with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of Morgan State, before dropping a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 decision in the championship match of the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational to host Duquesne, Saturday night.
After opening the tournament with two victories on Friday, the Bobcats posted its first 3-0 sweep over a team since defeating North Florida in three sets during the 2007 season, cruising past Morgan State.
The win also marked MSU's first 3-0 start since 2004 and its first three-match win streak since the 2005 campaign.
Against the Bears, the Bobcats were paced by Jodeen Rademacher with 10 kills and seven digs, while Taylar Barney added eight kills, a .318 hitting percentage and three blocks.
Defensively, MSU was led by Meghan Albiston with 23 digs, while Rachelle Allen chipped in 15 saves. Junior transfer Alex Penewell guided the Bobcats at the net with four blocks, to go along with five kills and a .400 attack mark.
True-freshman Mackenzi Campbell dished out 28 assists and added eight digs.
“We came out against Morgan State with the same energy we had after our two wins on Friday,” said MSU third-year head coach Sara Schaub. “However, against Duquesne we let a couple of their players get away from us, while we were inconsistent with our offense.
“Overall, I couldn't be more happy with the way we came out and competed this weekend,” Schaub said.
Against the Dukes, Montana State was led by Rachelle Allen with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Albiston guided the Bobcats defensively with a match-high 15 digs. Freshman Nicole Baker also reached double-digit digs with 13 saves.
For their efforts, Allen and Albiston garnered Courtyard by Marriott All-Tournament team honors.
